Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

MSRP: $ 140.00

Description: This is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 130g. Compact and high-performance, standard lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens.

Review 1 of 149

Price Paid:  $80.00 from Can't remember

Summary:
For the price, this is an EXCELLENT lens. The background distortion at full aperture is very pleasing to the eye. As a portrait lens, it's probably a little too short for my liking (85mm is my preferred length) but I have been really impressed with it so far.

The build quality is cheap (understatement) and the focussing ring is a pain to use (it's RIGHT on the end of the camera). Dust is a problem and I'd definitely think twice about sticking on my 5D - the first one I was sent actually arrived with a fair amount of dust inside it, which I obviously sent back. The replacement was ok to start but now is looking a bit dirty. Still, I guess I could just buy a new one!

Strengths:
Image quality is good for a lens of this price
CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAP!

Weaknesses:
Focus ring
Dust problems
Focussing a little innacurate (I'm comparing this to L-series lenses though!)

Review 2 of 149

Price Paid:  $80.00 from Cord Camera

Summary:
The lens does a good job for such a low price. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to seal very well and is full of dust (less than a year after purchase). It does seem like a plastic toy but it gets the job done.

Strengths:
Cheap, cheap, cheap!
Sharp images
light

Weaknesses:
Cheap (but what do you expect for $80?)
Doesn't seem to seal very well

Review 3 of 149

Price Paid:  $7600.00 from bhphoto

Summary:
Forget any and all negatives you ever read about this lens...The MTF rating is 4.2.
If you are looking for image quality, try finding a better rating at ALMOST any price. Forget that it is plastic. There are lens out there costing thousands that cannot give you this kind of quality. The choice is yours.

Strengths:
Incredible quality even in low light

Weaknesses:
absolutely NONE !!!!!

Review 5 of 149

Price Paid:  $74.00 from B&H

Summary:
Great lens for the price. I have been reading reviews on this lens for some time now. I almost did not order it because I didn't think it was possible that it could be sharp at $74. I was wrong! My first SLR some 30+ years ago had a 50mm canon attached. That lens was a great lens, but this one is even better. I can see using this lens alot. If it stops working tomarrow, I will order another one just like it.

TRY it, you will be surprised what $74 can buy from Canon. I started to buy the USM model, but I don't see how the image quality could be any better. NO REGRETS!

Strengths:
Sharp--Price

Weaknesses:
For the price, NONE.
