Summary: This is a good all around camera with plenty of features to keep beginners and experienced amateurs entertained and content. It shoots great in RAW format where the pictures can be blown up huge. Has 10.2 effective megapixels. This is an awesome entry level dSLR camera that anyone can use.
Strengths: 10.2 megapixel, fast autofocus, JPG or RAW formats, uses the inexpensive and high capacity SD cards (up to 32GB now using SDHC), plenty of features, ease of use in automatic or manual, longggggggggg battery life, pretty sturdy and doesn't have the toy feel of the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (its competitor)
Weaknesses: not great in low light situations, expensive, doesn't have built in autofocus motor in camera so you can only use Nikon AF-S lenses (which are expensive as well) unless you want fully manual lenses.
Summary: This is a great DSLR, it isn't a pro camera but that doesn't mean pros can't use it. Once i move beyond the realm of beginners, I plan on grabbing a higher end Nikon. This doesn't mean I'll be getting rid of my D40x though. This thing is great for going on rough hikes, taking on the plane, or just transporting in general.
With the guts of the D80 it really performs and now with the D60 coming out the price tag got a bit better.
Strengths: well built, ergonomic, ease of use, crisp image,
Weaknesses: 3 point focus area.
only AF-S and AS-I lens (but there are a lot out there)

Summary: I have owned nearly every incarnation of Nikon Pro and semi-pro camera since I purchased my first rangefinder in 1959. I was a professional with a studio but am retired now. I still do casual photography as well as product shoots, so I try to keep up with what is going on. I presently own a D300, a D80 and a D40x. I picked up the D40x because I wanted something small that I could grab when I did not want to be burdened down with one of the "Big Boys", lenses, strobes etc. I keep it handy, in a bag with 2 lens and a bunch of memory cards.
If you want a complete and thorough review, please read the one posted by the pros on this site. They were 100 percent correct, in all their observations. I was most pleased by the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of the review.
Please remember that this is not a "Pro" camera and is not intended to take the place of the D3 or D300, or even the D80, but it is a damn fine camera. Photos are excellent, and if one is careful, under most circumstances, you can duplicate the same type of photo you get with higher priced cameras. You can't go wrong with this little gem.

Like compact and lightweight. Good with 18-135 like all-around camera with acsepable image quality.
Bad think - is quality buld - from the begin had a problem - body lens contact slightly damadged by kit lens - often see a messadge: lens not attached when turn on the camera. Send to service - all they did just clean the contact - in my opinion the camera contact group need to be replaced. As expected, I see this mesadge again and again. SO, service is not proffesional at all! (I use east coast US service).
If not that - I like this camera.
Strengths: weight and dimentions, very quick responce and quick start.
good software (body and when using connecting to PC)
Summary: I have been using Nikon F65 and recently jumping from Fuji S9600, I have purchased Nikon D40x which is a pretty good camera. Picture quality is excellent, detailing sharp even on above 300% cropping. Noise is very minimum. The camera works good in manual mode with my earlier bought Nikon 80-200 mm AF-D telephoto zoom lens. No problem has yet been faced. Battery service is also very stunning. As a beginner from film SLR to DSLR, I have been really learning a lot with this camera without the fear of film misuse. Recommened for all those who has a desire for DSLR.
