The original photo backpack, the Photo Trekker Classic is, well, one of the classics of outdoor photography. The comfortable, removable, harness with the padded CollarCut straps makes it easy to carry. We've enlarged and enhanced it over the years to incorporate suggestions from many professional photographers.
I bought this bag because my old ones
couldn't hold all of my equipment any longer.
A large and heavy bag is difficult
to carry other than as a backpack, so
this was my choice.
The first thing I thought when I used it
was that it was quite bulky. I think it's
too deep. Much more so than my gear requires. (D30, 70-210/2.8, 2 other lenses and filters etc.) They could easily have reduced the depth by one inch. Other than that the main compartment seem well built and solid.
The padding of the shoulder straps isn't very good, and they are too short. I have to choose between having padding on my shoulders and a stomach strap, or use the last inch of padding on my shoulders and a waist belt. And I'm below average height (178 cm = 5'10").

Summary:
Well made, sturdy and easily able to carry a lot of gear. Think of your total investment in camera equipment - it's worth paying a bit extra for a bag that'll keep it safe whilst being comfortable to wear.
Strengths:
Well-made, sturdy bag with configurable internal dividers - means you can create lots of nooks and crannies to pack away all those bits & pieces you *might* need (see weaknesses below!) Once properly loaded, and the webbing adjusted, the pack carries well with little sagging for a bag without a solid frame. I wouldn't want to be out in a monsoon, but it certainly keeps things dry on a typical day in the welsh hills (rain, sun, more run, sun, wind and then more rain - all in the space of an hour)
This is a bit of an overkill if you only carry an SLR and a couple of lenses.
Weaknesses:
weight! The bag itself is not light & it's easy to overload (first time I had 2 TLRs, a 4x5 field camera, darkslides, filters, meters, film, flash etc. I could hardly pick it up!).
Lack of a tripod carrier is a pain, especially they are only £5 to buy seperately on a bag that cost £125.

Summary:
A great backpack for those times when the Pro Trekker isn't required for carrying big lenses like a 600/4.
Strengths:
Will comfortably hold a Nikon F4s body, FE body with MD-12 drive, 300mm f2.8 and 80-200 f2.8 AF lenses and 5 smaller manual focus primes, TC etc plus filters, film and so on. There's still enough room left over to carry a Metz 60 series flash in the top lid pocket, spare nicads, lightmeter etc.
It's also very durable, mine is holding out well and is very comfortable.
Can add extra pockets to the backpack if you require them which incrases it's carrying capacity.
Weaknesses:
No vertical mount for tripod.
Similar Products Used:
Lowepro Pro Trekker AW Varous Domke and Tenba backbacks. Many shoulder bags.
