Its worth every penny to use this lens as a macro only if you can get it for under $40 bucks used. I have seen much, much worse.

This is one of those lenses that simply should be avoided. Don't even try taking photos withit. It is a waste of time, money and film. I got it with my Elan 7, as part of a kit at Ritz. Back than I was just starting and didn't know of this brand and I was pretty much new to SLR market in the US. I took it on vacation, shot multiple rolls of film with it. Simple family shots, so luckly it wasn't any pro work, just shooting here and there. I developed the negatives, and I was very disappointed. At first I thought that I had to be taking photos with wrong settings. After all my Elan 7 was new to me, so I did some research, borrowed couple of Sigma EX and Canon lenses from a friend, and again a surprise. Much sharper, and colorful photos. Just don't buy it.

Everything! Difficulty focusing in dim light, slow focusing overall, poor long-distance photo quality

For quite a while, I thought the reason my photos taken on my Nikon N60 (which came with this lens, so I estimated the price) came out so poorly was because I was a failure as a photographer. Then I borrowed a basic 50mm from my father in law, and was suddenly turning out tremendous photos. DO NOT BUY THIS LENS. Even if you are a beginner, looking for something light and cheap, it''s not worth it. I think using this lens is a waste of time, energy and money.

Low price, light weight.

slow lens speed, soft photos, hard to use manual focus ring, hard to focus in dim light.

I had heard nothing but bad reviews about this lens, and bought it anyways! I wanted a cheap travel lens to carry with me everywhere that I didn''t care what happened to it. I''ve taken some nice snapshots of the family with it. For pro work it is worthless. I can''t even focus with it in dim light on my F100 due to the slow lens speed. Manaul focus is very hard due to the poor design of the focus ring. I have done some nice 8x10 shots at 28mm, but using a tripod and studio lighting to make it work. I let my wife play around with this lens now and she loves it much better than her $40 point and shoot camera.

Sharp at macro and close in which is where it counts for me!

Not sharp at more than maybe 50 yard or so.

While resolution of this lens sucks at long distances (don''t ask me why) it is extremely sharp in close (as in 1:2 macro). You can carry it anywhere without it being a burden to try to keep from hitting things since it''s construction quality is relatively good on its outer parts. But for long exposures i don''t recommend it because this lens can actually give you extremely small shift movements that ruin long exposures sharpness.

Feels sturdy. It has good optical quality.

Heavy(it weighs 9 oz.). Focusing ring is hard to keep in place while focusing manually(It is very loose)

Great lense for auto focusing and if you need a good lense at a small price. Don't like it for manual focusing.

Auto focus is fast. Has nice weight to it (doesn't feel cheap).

Focusing ring is loose. While in AF, can turn focusing ring enough to blur picture.

Spend the little bit extra for the better lens. It's a crap shoot if you'll get sharp, crisp photos or not. Also heard the electronics are bad in them.

I know I am posting a second review, but this review is more up-to-date, since I have had more experience with the lense. Okay, it's strengths are that it is light compared to some lenses(by this I mean lenses from other manufacturers besides Canon). Also it has good optical quality at all focal lengths and apertures, and at all focusing distances. It is also based on Sigma's 28-80 Aspherical Minizoom Macro, without the macro.

AF is a little loud. Using it on a manual focus camera would make focusing hard since its focus ring is not rubberized(still grippable though since it is wide and has a rough area), nor does it have any damping on its turning.

Since I am using the APS film format, not 35mm, any optical flaws would be easier to see(APS is smaller and thus when made into a normal size print the picture is actually enlarged)I haven't seen any flaws though. I have shot in the dark, in the sun, inside, and probably anywhere else you can come up with, and gotten at least two hundred great photos, and any mistakes with a picture were my fault. If you need a decent lense at a GREAT price, this is it. Great color, contrast, and exposure in all of my pictures. If you do lots of black-and-white photography though, don't ask me, I still need to get my first roll of Kodak Advantix black-and-white developed. I must also note all of pictures that I have seen so far have been taken without a skylight or UV filter on this great lense.
