Pentax Digital SLR Systemposted by Photo-John
Pentax didn't introduce a new digital SLR system at this year's PMA show. But the K10D is still pretty recent - we only just did a pro review for it. But they do have new pro lenses to go with their bodies and a new confidence that comes with the success of the K100D and K10D digital SLR bodies.

Nikon L12. S50c. and P5000 (Video)posted by LRY
Of the bunch. the P5000 is Nikon's return to what used to be called the Prosumer Compact with extra lens attachments and hotshoe tagging along for the ride. I dunno what these are called now since most manufacturers have left the Prosumer space for the lush green DSLR fields. I had chance to shoot with the P5000 at their demo corner but those units may not be representative of the production units. In the dim light of the trade show. the AF seemed about average for a compact. but when pre-focused the response was very fast. Anyway. Lindsay talks about all three cameras in the video.

Fujifilm F40fd and Face Detection (2 Videos)posted by LRY
Mike Steavenson of Fujifilm talks about Face Detection with the successful Fuji Finepix F40fd. You can watch FD at work on the screen in the background too. That's probably the most amusing part of the video! Add FD to the already successful F40 and to the best of my knowledge. the champion point-and-shoot lineage for usable autofocus speed and high ISO performance wears its crown for another year.

More Olympus E-2 Successor: Codename P-1posted by LRY
According to Sally Smith Clemens. Olympus Product Manager. the E-2 "will ship in 2007." What you see here (and in my first. short post) is a more recent build but as always. subject to change. You gotta think that if they're launching this year. their manufacturing needs to start ramping pretty soon...(total speculation on my part). Sally also mentioned that a number of technologies found in the new E-510 DSLR were originally bound for the E-2 before the engineers put E-2 things on pause due to quality concerns.

Nikon D40X Graphic Interface (Video)posted by LRY
The main reason I am excited about entry-level DSLRs is because all my students and family and friends and everyone else I meet always asks me about buying cameras. Realistically a lot more of these folks will be thinking about entry-level products and one. maybe two will gush like me about the high-end *and* be able to trot on over to the store to pick up a pair or three. So I think there is a good sized segment of the world that wants a bit more than a point-and-shoot and wants a bit more contextual help than just automatic-mode. Lindsay demonstrates one of the graphic user interface features in this video. Cue up the James Bond 007 theme...

Nikon D40X Intro Demo (2 Videos)posted by LRY
If I was over the top at the heights of DSLR technology yesterday. today finds me equally enthusiastic at the other end of the price spectrum. The Nikon D40X aims to bridge the segment of the market that wants high quality pictures with compact camera simplicity. As Lindsay Silverman of Nikon told us. "[these photographers] don't necessarily think of themselves as photographers" but they want something better than a point-and-shoot.
The Nikon D40X is pictured below with the new 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF lens (approx. 80-300mm in 35mm equivalent). Due to the wide angle view. it looks bigger than it really is. so check out this video and the next video for a sense of it's compactness. continue reading >> Sat Mar 10 2007

Canon Accessoriesposted by LRY
Sequels are as popular here as they are in Hollywood–Canon sequels are the new Speedlite 580EX II and EF 16-35mm f2.8L II. Highlights for the speedlite are weather sealing. a metal foot. and flash control from the new 1D Mk III's control panel. Recycling time is claimed to be 20% faster. and silent to boot. Another feature that I noticed during our demo is that the flash head pivots around 180 degrees in *both* directions. not just one. (People who like to bounce flash behind themselves--photojournalists and wedding shooters--will like this change.)
In the bonus sequel category. we have the wireless transmitter WFT-E2. It's a second generation unit too. and it features faster file transfer. USB hosting. remote triggering. and GPS support. continue reading >> Fri Mar 9 2007

Canon EOS 1D Mark III DSLRposted by LRY
Hello friends.
John. Paul. and I just met with the folks at Canon where we got the skinny on the new EOS 1D Mk III DSLR. I don't want to get everyone's hopes up. but after what I just saw. well. my hopes are waaay way up. I have used Canon EOS cameras since 1992 and when I worked for newspapers I shot in many challenging situations (and BTW I'm not saying I've done it all). All these years I thought Canon was just a step away from building the "almost perfect" SLR camera for my various needs. The EOS 1V was very close. Then digital came along and things got complicated. Today however. I think 2007 might just be the beginning of something really special for big pro DSLR shooters. It's called the EOS 1D Mark III. continue reading >> Fri Mar 9 2007

Sony DSC-W200. W90. W80posted by LRY
Speaking of encroaching on Canon's turf. Sony turns up its nose at the 12 MP full-frame Canon 5D DSLR with their new W200. a 12.1 MP point-and-shoot. Anyone paying attention to the megapixel wars knew that this day was just a matter of time. Yes of course the photosites are bigger and better on the DSLR but you gotta give credit to Sony for keeping the heat on–they are churning out new models almost as fast as Canon.
