Model Reviewed: 35-80 F4-5.6 DL Zoom

Strength:

Fast focusing, acceptable image quality on a long side, cheap.

Weakness:

Slow, crappy image at 35mm, the worst of all is a plastic mount which broke unexpectedly.

It came with my Minolta 2xi backup body. I would never buy this lens separately

Customer Service

Sigma sold a metal mount for $25 including shipping. Offered repair for $40, which is about 50% of the lens price.

Strength:

Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Lightweight and small.

More-solidly built than it looks or feels.

Weakness:

Severe barrel distortion at 35mm, and oddly enough, barrel distortion at 70mm.

Close focus isn't very close.

Soft in the corners even well stopped-down.

Not so sharp in the middle either.

Flares wildly in hard backlight. Use a hood or shade with your hand.

A limited zoom range and relatively slow maximum aperture should mean better optical quality than this. This lens is not very versatile, not very fast, and not very good, the worst of all possible worlds. There are much better lenses out there.

Customer Service

Not needed.
