Strength:

Internal focus and zoom Built like a tank Manual focus very smooth Zoom suitably tight Rotating tripod mount Metal hood

Weakness:

Heavy (price worth paying for great build) Hood has threads, not snap-on AF not lightning fast, but acceptable

Excellent lens, more than worth the money bought used on eBay. Great optical quality at all focal lengths, even at f4. Good flare control and great sharpness and color rendition. Acts as an amazing 150-450 f4 on a 1.5 crop DSLR.

Strength:

~very sharp. ~extremely well made. ~great price!

Weakness:

not much: just nit-picking here: ~heavy (price you pay for the build quality) ~6.6ft min focus could be alitte better.

Wonderful lens! ~the best zoom to 300 yet! very sharp at all apertures (except 32) Very good wide open. unbeleivable deal! on my fuji S2 it becomes a dream lens: (150-450 f4)

Strength:

Sharp (even wide open) Great color and contrast Excellent build quality Sharpness @ 300 f/4.0 is vastly better than Sigma!

Weakness:

Chintzy lens hood (still looking for better alternitive)

Overall, this lens does all I ask of it. Focus is fast enough for HS sports, including longjump and sprinters. Sharp enough for 8x12 @ f/4.0....gets better to about 81/2 or 11. Colors are wonderfull, better than many Nikkors I've had in the past. Solid construction. Overall if your shooting any kind of sports give this lens a chance.

Strength:

constant f4 great build

Weakness:

slow af...front one end to another but adjustment is quick with prefocus. HEAVY lens...slightly more than the 80-200/2.8 ( no compromise if you want a fast lens at 300mm)

sold my nikon 80-200/2.8 for this lens. the extra 100mm is more valuable than the constant 2.8 of the nikon.(must say that the nikon wsa superb but hardly used at 2.8) in terms of build and optics, i would rate it as superb, both wide open or stopdown. have tried w 1.4 and 2x converter and can AF too. bought for the constant f4 as well. variable zooms are too irritating at the long end....when you need more speed, it becomes slower at 5.6 usually. used it for portrait too and keep lighting in same settings when zooming. great lens for sports and outdoor when you dont the need the 2.8. the range gives more room for composition thus more picutres taken than the 80-200 range.

Model Reviewed: AF100-300mm f/4 AT-X II SD Glass APO

Strength:

Apochromatic design yields fabulous colors

Weakness:

Had to be sent back to distributor for (free) Elan II upgrade chip

As with the other top-end Tokina products this lens is a reasonable alternative to the more expensive Canon 'L' line.
Its constant f:4 aperature is useful for sports photography.
The "gross" auto focus movement is rather slow but "fine" corrections are reasonably fast.
