Inexpensive, small and light for the zoom range. Sharpness is "just fine" for nice 4x6 prints for the family photo album and emails to the grandparents.

Sharpness decreases as focal length increases. Autofocus is very slow--unusable for sports, where it must be used in manual for any chance of in-focus photos. Autofocus works fine in bright light with contrasty subjects that aren't moving much. Very plastic-y and construction is unimpressive, but that's what you get for this price. (Note-autofocus does not work on D40 or D60.)

Was looking for a lens to shoot my kid's soccer/baseball/football games plus airshows without spending a lot of money, and this lens is perfect for that. The f/6.7 max aperture at 400mm means high shutter speeds and 800-speed film, or 800 iso setting on digital for best results. This lens is for brightly-lit outdoors only.
