    Strength:

Fabulous lens, fast action, superb old school build quality, low pixal count.

    Weakness:

    Low pixal count.

12 years on and this camera really is difficult to beat if you want a digital camera that produces pictures as close to film pictures that I've ever seen. The combination of the excellent lens and low pixal count seems to let you replicate a film photograph in a way I don't see on the present day high pixal count super cameras. I'm not saying it is better than modern technology but in some ways it is. I wouldn't trade it for anything and if I ever lose it or break it I will be devastated. It is a solid metal lump in your hand and just feels right. Look around the web at example photos if you are thinking of getting one. This camera produces beautiful pictures very easily in any light. Rare thing in a simple digital camera.

12 years old and all the electronics are still readily available through Leica/Panasonic. Other parts not so easily obtainable. I've never needed anything other than new batteries every few years.

    Strength:

Good lens and quick picture snapping.

    Weakness:

    3.9 mp. Semi-usable ISO settings.

Just a great camera with a fast shutter and a better lens than many newer 10-12 mp brands. I just wish I could change lenses on it like the digilux 3. I guess the point of the camera is just grab, point, shoot. I like the bulk. I don't like credit card sized cameras that seem like they'd break if you squeeze them too hard.

    Strength:

Solid build quality, excellent lens, now available for a reasonable price.

    Weakness:

    Low pixel count, NO RAW.

I wanted one of these when they first came out but was turned off at the price in light of the rapid development cycle of DigiCams. Less than a year ago I picked up a clean one on ebay because no other camera I know of was ever made exactly like this one. I don't want a camera that looks like it could launch the Space Shuttle, is compact, rugged and produces a good picture.
The Digilux 1 is built like a tank is simple and produces a picture that does not look like most other DigiCams. The low pixel count (by today's standards) may turn off some, but for a haul around compact camera this fits the bill and at today's selling prices it's a steal.
