Olympus TG-1 iHS Above 10 Megapixel

Olympus TG-1 iHS Above 10 Megapixel

DESCRIPTION

Olympus takes the Tough camera category further by giving the new TG-1 iHS an f/2.0 lens - it's a 4x 25-100mm (equivalent) f/2.0-4.9 optical zoom, to be exact. The TG-1 also has a new 12-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor for improved image quality, as well as full HD video. The waterproofing has been improved so it's waterproof to 400 feet (12m), as well as shockproof, freezeproof, crushproof and dustproof. It accepts add-on lenses, has built-in GPS, a 3-inch OLED display and can shoot bursts up to 5 FPS.

Strength:

Takes good photos

Weakness:

The video is wacked - horrible ticking noise! I thought I could adjust is out - not! Olympus says it's normal for the camera. It is the auto focus adjusting. Just stupid - the video is not useable at all. Olympus will not take it back.

Good camera, but don't expect anything from the video - horrible ticking noise.

Strength:

Very good burst rate, good auto WB and color. Design and menus are good. Good functionality overall.

Weakness:

Very poor IQ for any print over 8x10 or any major cropping. Erratic AF. LCD useless in bright sun; turns this camera into a "Point and Guess." Fogs up if you go from underwater to above water (as in surfing shots where you have to go under a lot of waves. Lens ring falls off easily. No RAW (makes it harder to fix bad image quality.)

This camera is OK if you just want to put pix on the internet, email to your friends, or print small versions. But if you want a surf picture to hang on your wall, forget it. The fast, long burst is great, but it doesn't do any good if most of your pictures are soft and noisy, or coated with blue fog from condensation. Or you missed the subject because you couldn't see the LDC image. I bought it, used it, sent it back (thanks, Amazon for a fair return policy.)

Customer Service

Mediocre--they just want to get you off the phone; don't seem to have very much product knowledge.

Strength:

Great 2.0 lens, fast performance, very good image quality (esp. high iso and macro) for its class and nice, functional body design.

Weakness:

My TG-1 has a very annoying ticking sound in all the video's that I shot so far (even if I follow the advice from the manual to set the video sound to 'low'). I contacted Olympus, sent them sample vids and they refused the warranty claim because they consider this normal for this camera. Check out this samples to find out what Olympus thinks is "perfectly normal behaviour" for this camera:

These vids were made with one shot AF, IS off, and I can also confirm that this has nothing to do with the sound of the optical zoom (which is hardly noticeable in this camera).

Olympus says this sound is a consequence of waterproofing the camera, but they wouldn't tell me why other waterproof camera's apparently don't have this problem.

It's a real shame Olympus will not warrant this, because the rest of the camera is really good: great 2.0 lens, fast performance, very good image quality (esp. high iso and macro) for its class and nice, functional body design.

You might get lucky with your sample (or maybe not so unlucky as I was,) but be warned that Olympus will not grant any warranty claims if you end up with video sound like this.

Great stills, terrible video sound (in my sample) and poor service from Olympus

Customer Service

Very poor
