Review 1 of 6

Price Paid:  $660.00 from The Wiz

Summary:

I don't know what these reviewers are talking about but, this camera SUCKS. What matters to me most is quality and the quality is very very poor under low light or in doors. Meaning the picture is very grainy. This camera is only good for out doors.

Strengths:

Light weight and easy to handle and pretty

Weaknesses:

Poor quality

Review 2 of 6

Price Paid:  $1050.00 from Henry's

Summary:

After hunting around for awhile I found myself always going back to the Canon ZR50MC. As far as it's design, construction, and ease of use I found nothing else came close. The AV imputs allowed me to transfer all my earlier 8mm tapes to the new mini DV tapes. Sound recordings were crisp and the size and weight is a winner with my wife. Even the lighted buttons I found useful when I wanted to review some recordings late at night without turning on other lights. As far as the whining motor noise on playback??? If I really listen carefully I can just barely make out some motor noise on playback via the LCD screen, which for me is no issue as I usually playback through the TV and can not make out any recorded motor noise.

Strengths:

- Design - Size - Weight - AV inputs - Ease of use.

Weaknesses:

- Zoom a little awkward. - Auto focus sometimes struggles to keep up to zoom.

Similar Products Used:

Canon E57

Customer Service:

Henrys sales staff were very helpful.

Review 3 of 6

Price Paid:  $0.00 from Henry's Downtown Tor

Summary:

This was my first camcorder, purchased at Henry's in Toronto for C$1089. I had it for 5 days and tried everything, even loading the software. We loved it. As other reviewers mentioned, it's a really cool camera. It looks cute, the features and zoom are amazing, and it's easy to use. But unfortunately we realized the motor whines all the time and it's really annoying on playback. You can even hear it when you play back somewhat "noisy" situations, like riding around in a car or being outside. I thought it was unusual, and it turns out there are quieter models available. I took it back to Henry's and traded it for a Sony DCRTRV18 for C$1199, which after a quick test is definitely quieter. Only drawback is the zoom is only 10x and it's not as cute, but the rest of the features are the same. At first, Henry's tried to tell me the Canon was normal, but I guess when they realized I was interested in the Sony and we were writing up the new order, they admitted that they have had many Canons returned because of the noise. Sorry Canon. I hope you read this. Great camera, but I didn't want to spend the next 30 years introducing all my home videos apologetically with "uh... here's junior's first steps... sorry about the motor noise in the background." For all you Canadians out there, don't hesitate to buy from Henry's. Not only were they were ready to give me a full refund, I get 15 more days to try the new Sony and I can still get a refund. They're even keeping my old camera in the box for 15 days in case I change my mind! Not gonna happen though... Bottom line, the camera is too noisy. Don't waste your time and get something else.

Strengths:

Cute, easy to use, 22x zoom.

Weaknesses:

Too noisy, still pictures not that great.

Similar Products Used:

Sony DCRTRV18

Customer Service:

Henry's took good care of me when I had a problem.

Review 4 of 6

Price Paid:  $775.00 from www.dell.com

Summary:

I find this to be a very good camera. I agree with a previous reviewer the photos from the memory card are poor. I used it to tape a lecturer from the back of a crowded room and find it to pick out the speaker and level of voice very well. The lighting in some situations will cause the picture and color to degrade.

Strengths:

Decent Video Tape photos. Size & Wt. Sound acquisition. "cute" button color change - helps in low light. Remote.

Weaknesses:

Photos from memory card are poor. Quick Battery Drain. awkward hook-ups on front of camrea

Similar Products Used:

This is my first DV Camera. I''ve only used full-size video camera back from th late 80s!

Customer Service:

good so far.

Review 5 of 6

Price Paid:  $668.00 from www.videodirect.com

Summary:

Overall an excellent value. Spend the money and get the model 535 battery - 9 hours of battery life is better than the standard 1.5 hours. Video quality is excellent but the still photographs need a flash or a bright light (sunny day outside) to come out crisp. Indoor lighting doesn''t always work good enough.

Strengths:

USB and Firewire ports; Multiple Add-ons; very light camera; MiniDV format; approximately 70 still pictures with standard 8MB MultiMediaCard; ability to do dubbing after taping;

Weaknesses:

Pictures are only 640x480 x16 million colors. Color depth is good, but the size is not

Customer Service:

Video Direct folks were great to work with.
