Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $1000.00 from Ebay

Summary:

Great camera It has all the controls on the body so you don't have to go looking through menu's for them. The open architecture design allows you to change the viewfinder, shoulder pad and lens, all very nice features. I have used it for live events with superb results, the batteries last so long that I have never used more than 1 for a 3-4 shoot leaving it on the whole time. This camera is a traffic stopper, when you walk around with this you are bound to get some heads turning so don't expect to be stealthy and be able to film in all locations. The standard viewfinder isn't high resolution so its hard to get focus right. It is a improvement over the xl1 not only is the lens have better focus and slightly brighter image but for live events there is a button that takes all the displays off. In the previous xl1 you needed to get the remote and was a real inconvenience.

Strengths:

Open architecture design (multiple options)
Long battery life
Optical image stabilization
Ergonomic design

Weaknesses:

Can be awkward at times
Front heavy
Standard Viewfinder isn't high resolution hard to get focus

Panasonic Dvx100

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

The digital revolution is in the hands of guys like Robert Rodriguez and George Lucas. The XL1s is a bit low tech for them, but even a chump film maker or videogropher can at least look like a pro with one of these things. As a film maker, i leave the camera in manual mode. I chose this camera for the simple fact that i can adjust every aspect of the camera and interchange the lenses. a few people i know have some of these, and im thinking of getting another in the next year.

Strengths:

The most versitle camera on the market, period. Shoulder mounts and lenses are available, making it suitable for ANY SINGLE job or situation.

Weaknesses:

No built in XLR imputs. Having used PD150s, i loved the XLRs built in. Having to spend the extra money for them was bummer.

Similar Products Used:

Sony PD-150 (The XL1s is much better for about the same price... until they fix the bugs in the PD 170.)

Customer Service:

got the 4 year MAC service... a real way to put your mind at ease when your gurilla styling it.
