$1200.00 Summary: My experience is almost exactly the same as Douglas Scott. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMCORDER if reliability and service are considerations.
I purchased an Elura video camcorder after extensive research, and thinking that the Elura was the best and most reliable product on the market. I would not call myself a frequent user, but I use it often enough to save some treasured memories.
Last Fall, I was having serious problems with the Camcorder. In Auto rewind mode, the camcorder seriously damaged two tapes. There is an authorized Canon dealer where I live overseas. I took the camera for them to look at. Since the camera is NTSC, they were not able to work on it. They did tell me that there is an inherent problem with the rewind mechanisms on these cameras, and that there is nothing to do except to replace the entire internal mechanism. He assured me that I had not misused the camera and he checked the inside to make sure that it was clean; it was.
The US Canon customer support representative told me to return the camcorder to the Canon Factory Service Center. We Federal Expressed it to Canon. We really wanted the camcorder back for the holidays, and I wrote several emails to the Service Center asking them to expedite the repair, if at all possible. NO ONE RESPONDED.
According to the form I received, the repairs were to take two weeks. It took almost four weeks.
Today is the first day I was able to use the Camcorder. I put the Camcorder in the
rewind mode, and EXACTLY as before, about half way through the rewind process, the CAMCORDER jammed.
[By the way, if you have this problem, there are companies that will repair damaged DVDs--it costs about $30 per tape.] Strengths: If it works, it works fine and is a good camcorder. But if your memories are important to you, buy something more reliable. Weaknesses: RELIABILITY, RELIABILITY AND RELIABILITY. Service is awful.
