Summary:

The AGFA 1680e is a star performer when it comes to indoor / low light situations. I've owned several cameras ( Olympus 360 , Fujifilm MX1200, Casio 300, Hewlett Packard 240 ) and the AGFA outperforms each in it's ability to take superb photos in many different situations.

Strengths:

Great Photos. Good battery life. Excellent Flash W/ red eye Camera Easy to use. AGFA has the BEST software, (fast & simple)

Weaknesses:

Fragile design would probably not endure a single 5' drop onto sidewalk. Not recommended for children or teenagers. Slow to boot up.

Similar Products Used:

Hewlett Packard 240 - crap Casio 300- eats batteries Fujifilm MX1200 - good, but not easy to learn Olympus 360 - 20 min setup to take 1 photo, then 20 mins to download it....I just don't have the patience for such complication.....

Customer Service:

No Experience....knock on wood

Summary:

Good camera, but has been surpassed by newer products. It has poor low light sensitivity, and has a long delay from the time you press the button till the time it takes the picture. Transfer of pictures to the computer through the serial interface is a pain. No updated software from Agfa = bad support of their old products.

Strengths:

Optics, picture quality.

Weaknesses:

Battery life, low light sensitivity, plastic case, serial interface.

Similar Products Used:

None

Customer Service:

None, but the camera came with some dead pixels in LCD.

Review 3 of 48

Summary:

Great little camera. When I got this 2 years ago, it was state of the art. But as with all computers....time is passing it by. I would sure like for Agfa to put a USB port on one of these things, and to either switch to Compact Flash or at least program it to use 32 or 64 Mb Smartmedia cards. If Agfa ever puts in a larger CCD and keeps updating the hardware, I would purchase a new one.

Strengths:

Very good imaging. Good software. Excellent NiMh batteries. Great user interface. Limited manual control.

Weaknesses:

No USB. Limited to 16 Mb Smartmedia cards. Lacks optical viewfinder. Not the best macro shooter. Delay between shots. Eats batteries. LCD washes out in bright sunlight.

Summary:

Awesome camera. So easy to use it doesn't need a manual. Allows manual control of camera for those who like that or automatic mode for those who don't. Both modes take excellent pictures. Swivel design of the camera body allows many more different camera angles for subject compostion. With 1600mAh batteries the camera will run for a weekend of picture taking before recharging. Software is efficient, stable, easy to use and works great.

Strengths:

Ease of use. Long run time before recharging. Nice pictures

Weaknesses:

Hard to get macro photos to be in focus. I have taken some great macros with this camera but many that were out of focus. Date time stamp of photos is not preserved when camera uploads image to your PC. Very annoying. Although the camera itself stores a the date and time for each image, when you upload the image to your PC it changes the date/time stamp to the date and time you uploaded the image.

Review 5 of 48

Summary:

I haven't read most of the other reviews, so let me hit the high spots. I have taken about 500 photos with the 1680, and I am very pleased with it. I'm particularly gratified that it has done so well in taking photos at night in available light, and indoors by available light. The controls are easy to master and give you a great deal of control. Be sure to read the manual, which tells you some things that you won't find out otherwise, such as that pressing the shutter button *halfway* lets the camera "look" at your subject in automatic exposure mode and set up focus and aperture information, making for a faster response when you click the shutter completely. From the attenuated flash to the anti-red-eye feature, Agfa has taken the time and effort to think through the features that a real-world user wants. The only problem I have found is a consistent lask of saturation of the image, but I run everything through Photoshop anyway and increase saturation and contrast by +20 across the board. One of the other reviewers mentions that by using the white baseline control with non-white cards, you can create artificial filters; I find that the Agfa sometimes will not register some surface colors accurately, probably due to the oversensitivity to infrared that CCDs are notorious for. I don't use the white baseline feature, which may correct for this. Unfortunately, my camear was stolen about three weeks ago, but I can sympathize with the thief. I liked it too. Mike
