Summary:

4 year old camera isn't worth the money today. Takes only 640x480 pictures. The PhotoPC 650 is what I would get today. But the PhotoPC 500 I originally paid $500 for in 1996, and its available now for under $200. There is just too many much better cameras out now to consider this one.

Strengths:

I've been told its an incredibly high quality image compared to even the more recent digital cameras.

Weaknesses:

Too old, only 640x480 resolution.

Review 2 of 15

Summary:

I originally paid $275 for this camera when it was first released. I see prices have dropped to around $200. The camera is very durable, I have dropped it several times, and taken it on some rough mtn. biking expeditions with no problems whatsoever. The software is pretty good, easy to use and it saves to JPEG format. The pictures are pretty decent when you use the highest setting. I has a hatch for some additional memory storage chips, but I can't find them anywhere. The images are pretty decent, but not what I'd call really crisp. You must get closer to objects than the viewfinder leads you to believe. Other than that, good product.

Strengths:

Not too expensive. Very durable, saves to JPEG format automatically.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes has trouble storing images, seems to happen when you change lighting conditions. Only holds 30 hi vo images.

Customer Service:

O.K. voice mail slot for about 15 minutes

Review 3 of 15

Summary:

Overall, especially for the price, this is a great camera for those just entering the digital camera arena. You get photo quality that exceeds more expensive cameras. You can still get these on auction sites, but probably not in stores - do not pay more than $250.00 for this camera however, as newer models/makes can now offer more features for just a little more money.

Strengths:

The Epson Photo PC (basic model) is a very good, lower priced camera for beginners, or those who want something to use for emailing photos, and for posting photos on web sites. Although with some images, there is a little of a "halo" effect (I've been told this is cause by the camera's software, that enhances the pixelation to make it look clearer), it still produces good color, skin tones, and so on. It takes very good closeup shots.

Weaknesses:

No viewscreen on back, so you can't review what you've taken, and the flash could be a bit stronger, as photos taken from more than 6-8 feet away suffer in quality using it. You cannot swap memory to take more photos - once you replace the card, it's permanent. No zoom. You can, however, screw on camcorder lenses to help protect the main lens, unlike many other digital cameras.

Similar Products Used:

When a neighbor bought a Sony Mavica, for more than twice the price of my Epson, we took various photos of the same objects, under the same conditions, using the Epson's 640 x 480 resolution. In every case, the color, contrast, and clarity were better on the Epson.

Customer Service:

I never had to use Epson's customer service, so I cannot give a rating on it.
