Summary: My first digital camera was an AFGA ePhoto Smile. Not only does it take bad fuzzy pictures, it took a long time to download those little pictures. Then came the Epson PhotoPC 650. There are a world of difference in image quality and resolution between the two. It is an easy to use point and shoot camera for those who do not want to worry about myriad of options. My first sets of pictures turned out great and subsequence ones are even better (see them below).
Within the first week, I've snapped over 300 pictures. Suddenly, everyone in my family became camera shy, this includes all my friends at work. I don't know why... :) The quality is adequate for beginners and for the intermediates, there are many camera tricks out there to get even better photos. If the color LCD viewfinder is not used, this camera can take up to a hundred flashed photos using a set of alkaline batteries (4xAA). I strongly recommend 2 sets of NiMH batteries and a recharger. Now I can take close to 300 photos (most with flash) before recharging.
The macro mode to take close up pictures is my favorite. I like to take picture of flowers so I use this mode a lot. One time, I took a macro picture of my dad's face. That is the last time I will ever do that. He looked scary! Fortunately, he made he delete it.
If I were to improve this camera, I would do the following:
1. Make permanent the date setting. Every time I changed the battery, I have to enter a new date using the LCD display and this drains the battery a bit. Most of the time, I don't set the date because of this.
2. Have a setting to take pictures at night. This camera will not focus at night and all landscape pictures are fuzzy at best. I really like to take pictures of landscape whether lighted or not. The flash worked well at night but sometimes a picture would come out too bright for the focused object and really dark for the background.
3. The skin tone of people turned out a little bit on the dark side. Playing with the brightness setting solves this problem but this makes picture taking a lot more complicated.
4. Fix the problem of different shades of red. I have trouble taking images that has different tones of the red color. The camera seemed to blend them all into one red blob!
4. Make it a little bit smaller? Strengths: Very easy to use. When using NiMH Batteries, can take up to 300 photos with flash. Resolution and image quality good enough for prints up to 5"x7". Macro mode. Auto focus. Cheap. Easy to use LCD viewfinder. Weaknesses: Does not retain date when changing batteries. Does not focus very well in low lighting conditions. Pictures of people usually come out too dark. Trouble seeing red tone. Too bulky compared to other camera. Similar Products Used: AFGA ePhoto Smile, Sony FD71, Fuji MX-1200 Customer Service: Camera works great. Don't need to talk to them, except maybe to complement on their great product and provide feedbacks for future improvement.
