from Best Buy Summary: I bought a HP Photosmart 318 camera in January 2002. It came with a 1 year warranty.
In June 2002, for no reason, the top LCD display went blank. I called customer assistance and they offered a replacement camera. I received the replacement camera in about a week and returned my camera to them. Big mistake. The replacement camera was obviously well-used. The small print in the warranty indicates the replacement can be one that is new or "equivalent in performance to new". The LCD picture display on the back of the camera had mild scratches indicative of wear, while my malfunctioning camera was still pristine. I figured this was technically "equivalent in performance to new" and accepted the camera.
Now, a year later, the navigation wheel on top of the camera has worn out and no longer works. This seems to me to be a wear item and likely due to the fact that I received a camera much older than my new one. I called the customer assistance people and HP refuses to do anything about this. After reading other complaints on this board it appears this type of poor service is standard procedure for HP.
I will never buy another HP product again and urge others to do likewise. Poor product, even poorer service. Strengths: Picture quality is good for the price Weaknesses: Short camera life, POOR HP customer service. Similar Products Used: Sony Mavica Customer Service: Terrible! The owner's manual does not even list a toll-free number for warranty service (had to call a sales 800 number to obtain the secret toll-free customer service number) and replacement of new camera with old worn camera, and subsequent refusal to correct the situation is indicative of the poor quality and "let 'em eat cake" customer service attitude of this company.
