Review 1 of 11

Summary:

I've read the reviews, and they're very accurate in describing the camera. Though many have grown in pixel size and many different form factors now exist, the Coolpix 900s is still a great camera. It get's more 'Ooos and Ahhs' from other digital camera owners. This is my third digital camera, and it's the best I've had. I have had the camera for almost two years. The pictures are the best I've seen of the cameras I've owned. They print like real photos (the fine resolution). I've used it from selling stuff on the internet to taking pictures on family vacations. NIKON SUPPORT About after 9 months of heavy use (a few drops and many trips to the ocean *stored in a ziplock bag*), the camera gave out on me. I couldn't believe it. I e-mailed Nikon support and they said to send it in with receipt. Well, I couldn't find my receipt for the life of me, so I sent it in and asked for them to charge me. Well, I got the camera back in four (4) days! NO CHARGE! They've got themselves a dedicated customer. PLUS, the phones weren't busy when I called in (8:00am PST). RECOMMENDATIONS Buy a big memory card, and some NiHD batteries. Yeah, yeah all complain about battery life, but that's how digital cameras are. With the NiHD, I can shoot a whole days trip with one set. I keep three sets with me and carry two when I travel. Get a quick charger over an AC adapter. Batteries charge in about an hour (I recommend Olympus)and last over a half day of shooting. Buy a memory card reader. Don't use the cables that came with the camera. They work fine, but are too slow. Hey, they cost around $30, and with a years worth of pictures, easily pay itself off. Summary YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED WITH THIS CAMERA. It's great camera. I'm set on getting the 950 so I can print poster size photos.

Strengths:

Easy form factor. Easy to learn to use. Top quality photos.

Weaknesses:

Slow shutter speed. Vewfinder not representative of photo.

Customer Service:

Review 2 of 11

Summary:

I got this camera after tons of research. This camera was the best price for the best quality! When these pictures are taken and printed at the highest quality (on photo glossy paper,) you can't tell it isn't a "real" photo! I bought rechargable batteries and that saves a lot of money. I have found that you can keep the camera on and in use for about 30-45 minutes (again, that is taking pictures about 2 per minute). The flash cards may be a bit expensive, but having 2 30 mb cards works great for me.

Strengths:

The quality is wonderful and the camera itself is light and has never been in the way. I would recommend a filter to protect the lens. The price has come down a lot since Jan. 2000. It would have been nice to pay less than $1000 for it.

Weaknesses:

I had to buy SanDisk to put the pictures to my computer. That was about $100 more. The flash for the camera is good, but for inside and pictures of people, an extra flash would work great. Unfortunately, Nikon's flash would cost another $300-$400 and would be very bulky to carry around.

Customer Service:

I got the camera in Japan and all documentation was in Japanese. The camera can be set to English, but I had to get the manual from their website.

Summary:

If you are going to buy a digi cam in the price range of 600-1000 dollars, this is the one for sure. There is really no reason to buy anything else.

Strengths:

This thing really is cool. Great value for a digi cam. Beautiful display, and compareable quality pictures to some cameras that are several hundred more.

Weaknesses:

takes a while to get familiar with all the features, but this certainly isn't exclusive to this model

Summary:

The 900s is unbelievable. I usually shoot with 35 or a 6x7 Mamiya and I had felt for some time that I really didn't want a "toy" camera. I had tried a low end Casio and that inially got me interested in digital. Took some great shots with it but the quality was limited. I then began research on the net and comparison shopped image to image and the Nikon blew them all away. I've had the camera since December, taken hundreds of pictures, and the images are incredible. Combined with the Epson stylus 700 and photo paper, I'm turning out 35 quality to 8X10. I've experience zero problems and as long as you understand the limitations of the slow speed, you won't be disappointed. Try the black and white mode; I personally like it better than the color. Touch everything up in Adobe. It's a given. Write if you want to share images or info.
