Price Paid:  $85.00 from Retail

Summary:

Being an older model of camera, you can pick up the PDC700 on Ebay or a few retailers for under $100.00. With a top resolution of 1024 x 768, you cannot expect to use this camera for large prints (4 x 6 max). For online web uses however, this may fit the bill. The three quality settings (1,2, or 3 stars) allow for more or less space in memory for more shots. I found that unless I used the camera at it''''s top resolution, I was unhappy with the quality of the photos. A no-thrills unit here. Fixed-focus lens. No zoom. Weak flash. Weak LCD display. The images are sub-par to today''''s budget digital cameras (such as the Fuji A101) but are still usable provided you know your limitations. Indoor flash shots are hit and miss, as you need to be around 4-6 feet to get a good amount of captured light. The LCD is useless in a darker room, and is so faded outdoors you need to use the tiny optical viewfinder instead. All this being said, if you just need basic web shots or small prints no larger than 4x6, and have some NiMh rechargeable batteries to use, this is a fine little "carry around" camera for basic photography. If you want cherished vacation photos however, look at a higher end unit.

Strengths:

Small. Reasonably easy to use. Comes with accessories (A/C adapter, case.) that you usually do not find in lower-end cameras. Reasonable quality photos good for small prints or online uses.

Weaknesses:

Fixed-focus (not auto-focus) lens. Optical viewfinder is too small, and LCD is too weak (not bright and clear enough). Even though AA alkalines drain quickly on any digital camera, they drain extremely fast on this unit compared to others. Slow write times lead to waiting to take your next shot. Removable memory card is not included in box, as is no formal instruction manual on paper - only a "quick start" guide.

Similar Products Used:

Varied Olympus, Sony, Fuji, Canon and other digital cameras.

Have not used.

Price Paid:  $90.00 from Value City

Summary:

One of the best hundred bucks I''ve ever spent. If you are the type of person who does most of your picture taking on inexpensive or disposable (gasp) cameras, this is for you. At 850ish pixels, this camera is not a heavy hitter in the resolution department. HOWEVER, for taking pictures that will end up being small, 4x6 or 3x5, it is PERFECT. All the photos I take are vacation shots or shots of family activities, so its perfect for sending the small photos out through email. At $90 this camera has all the features of others 3 times its price: 1. Comes with AC adapter, USB cord, serial cord, and case. The $500 digital cameras I''m looking at don''t even come with an AC adaptor! 2. Adjustable flash...VERY important! Most cheap digital cams have really cheap flashes. 3. Compact Flash card slot. I have a 32MB card (the most the camera will hold, I believe,) and on the highest resolution setting, it holds 60 pictures. On the ''fine'' resolution (middle setting) the camera can hold over 140 pictures!!! On the lowest setting, the camera holds over 200 pics. 4. 3 different resolution settings. Good to have, but with less than 1 megapixel, you''ll always want it set to the highest level. If you want to make the leap to digital photography, but can''t stomach the thought of dropping a $500 camera onto the floor, then head on over to Ebay where you can get a 700 for less than $100 bucks. In fact, after playing around with mine for a few months, two family members went out and bought one. It takes great pictures, its small, has more features than your average casual picture taker needs, and WON''T BREAK YOUR WALLET!

Strengths:

Enormous bang for your buck. Takes great low resolution pics.

Weaknesses:

Like every digital camera, goes through lots of batteries. I would guess that one set of batteries (4 AA''s) lasts me around 80 pictures on the highest resolution, and using the flash. Camera doesn''t remember resolution setting. Defaults at normal, so everytime you turn it on you have to switch it to the highest setting.

Similar Products Used:

Lots of other digital cams!

Customer Service:

Haven''t had to use it.

Price Paid:  $189.00 from Wal-mart

Summary:

I have had this camera for about a year now and have been fairly pleased with it. For the money you cannot beat this camera if you want a point and shoot camera. I noticed Wal-mart is now selling this camera for $119.95. When I bought the camera it was around $60 more. I added a 16 MB flash card. This really allowed me to expand the use of this camera. I also have to use E2 batteries in this camera because it is a hungry little burger. Over the year I have taken hundreds of photos. They range from scenic shots to low light cave conditions. As for the quality out side, it is outstanding. I have been able to get some excellent portraits. Though in low light conditions you will get a lot of noise. If this little camera would come with a zoom it would be outstanding. After a year, I have decided to go with another digital camera. I am getting ready to purchase an Olympus E-100 RS. The main reason for upgrading is the 10X optical and 27X digital zoom. I like to do a lot of outdoor and action shots and the PDC 700 just was not doing the job. The biggest difference beside the zoom with the ability to take 15 shot in ONE SECOND. To get back to the subject, this is a highly recommended camera for simple shots from low to high quality. I know I have printed numerous 5X7 shots and even framed them all. I have notice sometime you will get slight digitalization, but its on the wall and framed. Not too many people are going to put their noise up in the photo and tell you about the digitalization.

Strengths:

Small light Cheap!!! Good Quality photos internal memory + optional external

Weaknesses:

No zoom focas flash Veiwfinder fogs up easy EATS THE BATTERIES

Similar Products Used:

Numerous digital cameras

Customer Service:

I called when I first got the camera, because it would not reconize the 16 MB flash card. They really tride to help but it was one of those things I had to play with to get to work. Since then it has

Price Paid:  $179.00 from Wal-Mart

Summary:

I bought this camera when my daughter was expecting her third child. I wanted to be able to send pictures of the baby to friends and family via e-mail ASAP after Emma''s birth. Using Photo-Max and PaintShop Pro, I have been able to send good pictures for nearly two years. Indoor quality using the flash isn''t the best, but it takes really nice outdoor photos. It also eats batteries like there is no tomorrow. (Switching to Duracell Ultra has helped a lot though)

Strengths:

It''s truly a point and shoot camera, nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

Weaknesses:

Battery life and flash capabilities could be a lot better. Red eye reduction would be a great addition.

None
