Summary:

A small lightweight camera producing reasonably good images (1.3 mega pixel). A great unit for kids to learn photography. Optical zoom (and digital). Average price. Lens is ok. Realistic reproduction of colors. Not much loss of sharpness. Notwithstanding my comments in the weaknesses (mentioned to be fair to the consumer)I'd recommend it.

Strengths:

Price/Qualiy ratio and the ease of use. (I paid about $400 for the camera) The menu selection function is easy to follow and easy to set. You don't need to use the instructions to get started. The instructions are well written and give some good hints for taking pictures. Great for a point and shoot situation - eg when driving in the car set the camera to auto function to capture that candid shot (in this instance the passenger is the photographer of course - Don't click and drive!). The image is stored fairly quickly and the resolution is quite good.

Weaknesses:

This camera loves batteries. I carry spares if doing a lot of photography (but you need spare cards too). The serial download is slow This is not a problems of course if you have only a few images. But when downloading 70+ images taken at the maximum resolution I think I'd go and get s cup of coffee. Sanyo should consider - no, should have, a USB connection as the technology is not so incrementally expensive and has been around for a while. The bundled software is basic (as can be expected with most cameras). I experienced some compatability probs with MGI Photosuite (with a network card for my local ISP. I suspect that there would not be a problem if this were not so.) - In any case MS Photo is ok for basic work. The Camera comes with Sanyo software for downloading which is adequate. As with most DC's you might consider upgrading the memory to capture and store images at the highest possible resolution for more flexibility when editing later on.

Similar Products Used:

Sony MVC FD 95 - but this camera cannot be fairly compared as it is not in the same class - the Sony was in excess of $1000. However, for price and quality for every day use or low level professional use such in real estate I'd choose the Sanyo.

Customer Service:

I asked Sanyo and MGI about the compatabitily probem but they reported that there were no known problems in this area. Resolved my self by going to Win2k.
