Review 1 of 90

Price Paid:  $0.00 from rent at photo c

Summary:
When i should choose a digital cam i just rented this canon g1 and had it for a try a couple of days. its a very very good camera even though its >old>technology with only about 3 mill pix e..q. its NOT the pix that counts alone this G1 have a wonderfull lens of very fine quality!remember that!! the glass is very important!! so if you got the time and dont need a fast camera and are able to get this G1 for a cheap price-get it.It is a very good camera ! For my purpose i had chosen the G2,Pro 90 and G5(all Canon) and im happy with that!

Strengths:
the lens roughness(strong camera) its a canon flash mount

Weaknesses:
too slow eats batteries

Similar Products Used:
many from nikon olympus canon

Customer Service:

Review 2 of 90

Price Paid:  $560.00 from Ebay, 1+ years ago

Summary:
First off, let me say that the repair techs at Canon are GODS. More on that later. This review has been a long time coming. Let me start by saying that this has proven to be a really impressive camera. I use it to shoot weddings (along with an extra battery, two 128 meg cards, two 32 meg cards, a 2x tele adapter, a 1.5x wide angle adapter,a Canon Speedlite 380EX flash, and a 43mm polarizer filter. I've shot over 3000 photos with it, all over Colorado. The focus is a mischievious child, and it has cost me a few choice photos, but the detail has been superb, the color is rich but not ridiculously so (as in a Sony or Kodak), and it has more contrast than your average Nikon. What's strange is that the Fstop only goes to F8. For those Ansel Adams shots, I need at least an F16. They've been on cameras for decades, why stop now? Someone said it before, and they are correct- tree limbs have a purple glow called chromatic aberation. That may be caused by Canon's choice of lens glass in this camera, or it may be a function of the CCD. Someone also wrote that it handles like a bar of soap, and that's true too. The photos it takes however, are very, very, good when printed at a decent lab on silver halide paper. They look pretty convincing on an Epson 785EPX or HP5550 printer, also. When using the flash, I always knock the flashe's power back a bit in the camera's software. Focusing for macro shots is somewhat tricky. I take 1 photo at about 8 inches distance, and then back away 1 inch for 3 other shots. Battery consumption is healthy. I use the LCD for framing all shots, and I get about a full hour and a half out of the first battery. A typical wedding and reception almost drains two batteries. NOTE TO ALL CAMERA MANUFACTURERS!!!!! QUIT EMPHASIZING DIGITAL ZOOM!!! It's a great way to take an ugly photo, if that's your thing.

Strengths:
Low Power Consumption, Flexible monitor, compatible with Canon Speedlite flashes, intuitive menu, and it takes great photos with nearly full creative control, 90% of the time. The prints blow away film prints from my Canon Elan SLR.

Weaknesses:
Please sirs, may I have a neckstrap? I promise I won't hang myself with it. Focusing can be unpredictable, and the monitor doesn't zoom in enough to check focus on captured images. F-stop 8? I live in the mountains, and I WANT DETAIL!

Similar Products Used:
Olympus C2000, C211, Canon A40, Nikon 700, 900, 950, Sony P30, Mavica.

Customer Service:
Like I said above, these guys are Gods. I've had to send it in twice now, once for a no-power-up problem, and recently for two pixels that insisted on glowing christmas colors on every shot. Each time

Review 3 of 90

Price Paid:  $699.00 from NYC

Summary:
I purchased this camera to give digital photography a try. I was really disappointed with the results....until I learned to use the camera fully. The auto exposure is okay...but taking control will give you outstanding 8X10 prints with little or no enhancements performed through software.

Strengths:
The ability to control most functions of the camera. The rapidity of the write function to the ibm microdrive, and the capacity. I can take over 300 pictures without having to download to a computer. Since I consider myself a novice, I get all the practice I need without worrying about exhausting space. I get to evaluate the pictures at home on a 21 inch monitor rather than out in the field on a 1.8 inch lcd screen.

Weaknesses:
Manual Focus mode is a complete mystery to me ... a bar appears on the lcd that fills as you change the focus but since there is no numeric scale associated with it, I find it impossible to use. The lcd is too small to determine if you have correctly focused. I find that having a sheet of white paper with me really helps produce the best pictures for color tonality. I use it to customize the setting of the white balance (WB). I've not been able to produce good color photos by using the Auto WB feature. The tungsten and cloudy WB features are very good. The sunny WB causes the sky to have a slight purple tint.

Similar Products Used:
None ... we now have a Nikon Coolpix 2500, but it isn't comparable.

Customer Service:
I haven't had to use this service yet. Their website is sufficient for me. I was able to update the firmware by following the directions posted on the website.

Review 4 of 90

Price Paid:  $400.00 from eBay

Summary:
If you want a really good digital camera but don't want to spend a lot of cash, I highly recommend this one. It can be found used online for a very good price. While I'm not ready to give up film, I bought this camera to carry when I don't feel like toting my SLR's around or for those days that you just feel like "burning film".

Strengths:
Complete image control. Great color reproduction. Small and unobtrusive. Twisting LCD. Auto-bracketing. Fast lens. Too many more to list.

Weaknesses:
No data is displayed in viewfinder. Insufficient minimum aperature. Poor ergonomics. Uses handstrap instead of neck strap. Flimsy door over ports. Manual focus is useless.

Similar Products Used:
None.

Customer Service:
Excellent.
