Review 1 of 3

Price Paid:  $199.00 from Best Buy

Summary:

I seem to be the lone voice in the woods here, because I've not experienced the problems that the other users are reporting. Maybe I'm not using it properly? I don't know. All I do know is that with the exception of a jammed battery door that was quickly resolved (and has not reocurred) and once when the lens refused to extend (also quickly resolved; I put it down to the fact that it was damnably cold), I've experienced no problems. In fact, I'm delighted with it.

Strengths:

Takes terrific photos when you use it as intended. Lots of metal - I like that. Feels solid and other than the two problems reported above, has taken being dropped, used in very cold weather, even used from a water-borne kayak.

Weaknesses:

Battery meter seems a little inconsistent. Won't take a 1GB SD card. Seems to be about it.

Similar Products Used:

Nikon Coolpix Some Canon

Customer Service:

The Gateway website has been helpful on the two occasions I needed it.

Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $400.00 from Gateway (online)

Summary:

While this digital camera takes great photographs, it has a serious drawback: over 80% of the time I fire it up it gives me an error message, making it virtually impossible to use on short notice (you have to shut it down and try again, or remove the card, or try a different setting, or stand on your head and whistle, or ......). Efforts to get Getway to recognize and fix the problem have been like pulling teeth - painful, frustrating, and aprehension-making. I would not recommend this camera to anyone with a low frustration level. Given the lack of service from Gateway I will never buy another product from them, and wish I had not bought this one (which I will be replacing soon with one of the new 8mp cameras from another company).

Strengths:

Great images

Weaknesses:

Rarely starts up the first time - often takes several minutes to get past the error messages. This is apparently a commom complaint (I have read many similar complaints on various message boards).

Similar Products Used:

4 other digital cameras, starting back in '97 with a .5mp camera and steadily moving up the mp range.

Customer Service:

Gateway service is long on talk and short on results. Absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced.

Review 3 of 3

Price Paid:  $400.00

Summary:

The camera produces nice quality digital pictures, especially given its portability. It could be somewhat more intuitive to use. Its main problem was the shutter/lens cap: its tiered design makes it easy to break or malfunction.

Strengths:

The product was relatively easy to use and produced nice photos. Its highly compact design makes it almost pocket-sized without sacrificing a lot in quality.

Weaknesses:

The durability of the automatic lens cap/shutter. It's spiralled and made of cheap plastic, so it can malfunction easily. Things can easily get caught in it, and the three different plastic pieces slide poorly over each other, sometimes getting stuck halfway. The downside is that while everything else in the camera might be fine, a half closed lens doesn't let you use all the nice features, rendering the camera useless.

Customer Service:

THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS A KAFKA-ESQUE NIGHTMARE. I mailed them my camera and for months wrangled with them to get it back or get a refund. Endless phone calls, emails, etc. I would HIGHLY recommend NEVER buying a Gateway product for this reason. There are better cameras that will not break, and when they do, will not involve a protracted struggle to have a working camera.
