from Ra-lin Summary: This is the best camera I've ever used! To me, it falls into the category of "you don't know what you're missing if you've never had it." Who should buy this camera? Someone who is looking for excellent resolution and has (or is willing to add) hard drive storage space for the rather large files. It can also shoot in raw mode, a must for anyone who likes to do a lot of artsy post-processing on their images. It's also a camera for someone who wants the ability to basically point-and-shoot on occasion, but also wants the flexibility of having more control on other occasions. Who should not consider this camera? Someone who just wants a little camera to carry in their pocket or their purse and who will never learn or use the various settings on the camera. Strengths: Color values are remarkable, and many pictures are perfect, right out of the camera with no post-processing.
Detail capture is nothing short of amazing, both with the regular lens setting and the macro setting. The resolution allows you to be several feet away from a subject and yet capture amazing detail, down to individual strands of hair and pores. The macro setting lets you get in close to subjects such as insects or flowers and results in perfectly sharp and detailed photos. The white balance compensation works remarkably well, compensating for various types of lighting indoors. This camera also allows you quite a bit of leeway in manual settings for aperture, shutter speed, etc. It has a metal tripod mount as well as a hot shoe for external flash. With an external flash that can bounce (I use the 420EX), there is virtually no limit to where you can shoot. The camera also has a nice-size tilt and swivel LCD, so you cn hold the camera over your head, down at your waist, etc., and see what you're shooting. The optical viewfinder has a diopter adjustment for those of us with less than perfect vision. Weaknesses: Ability to autofocus in low light situations is iffy. But, that's where the manual settings come in! The focus-assist beam is helpful, as is the option to choose between center focus or pattern focus. Lens cover that comes with camera comes off rather easily; I purchased a lens adapter with a snap-on metal lens cover that goes over the sky filter (the filter protects the lens and keeps my fingers off it!)
