Canon PowerShot S5 IS 8 to 10 Megapixel

DESCRIPTION

The ultra-powerful 12x optical zoom on the PowerShot S5 IS means you'll get the shot you want with no compromise, yet that's only the beginning of what makes this camera so exciting. The S5 IS is loaded with many of Canon's latest advanced technologies including the DIGIC III Image Processor, so both still images and movies are rendered with fine detail and luminous clarity. And now ambitious photographers have even greater creative latitude thanks to an included hot shoe adapter that allows you to attach Canon Speedlite EX Series external flashes.

Strength:

Great zoom, fairly rugged instrument, lots of features, for the beginner (Program) to the advanced amateur (or professional I used to be) with a wide selection of flash settings and special effects. I haven't gone into the EOS system because this little gem will produce photos which are just as good.

The screen can be rotated several degrees, either to take a self portait or completely against the body, if it is to be used, instead of the eyepiece.
When clamped high above (using a Manfrotto clamp), the camera will show a true coverage of the area, when the screen is tilted downward.

There an extensive menu for the advanced amateur, on which everything can be selected, from muting the camera during shooting to a "real shutter click", screeen brightness etc.

Weakness:

No case, inability to attach regular filters, except by having a lens hood installed (it vignettes the corners at the wide angle setting)

The fact that there was no case and that I had the camera loose in the bag produced impact damage to the eyepiece (but not to a pont where it becam unusable).

No protective coating on the TFT screen, which, if it is wiped too often to repel rain or plain take out fingerprints, etc, will eventually become spotty but still usable.

Fine little camera, lots of features.
I use it regularly to photograph items in a studio-like setting for a museum catalogue and it performs marvellously well.

As well, I use it all over the place outside in the rain, snow and cold taking stills and movies, mostly trackside of railroads.

Customer Service

I sent the camera with impact damage to Canon to have the screen replaced and the eyepiece repaired.

The total repair was afffordable and they did a complete overall to the point that I received the camera back "as purchased"

Repair only took one week.

Strength:

Takes great pictures. Not very bulky. Tons of options but still easy to operate.

Weakness:

doesn't offer RAW format.

I bought this camera instead of an SLR because I wanted to be able to set up shots manually and be able to take casual pictures without any effort. I am really impressed with the quality of the pictures. I also bought the wide and telephoto lens attachments for it and they work great! This camera gives me tons of options with little hassle.

Strength:

Great photos, easy to use in full auto, fast.

Weakness:

Lasted only four months and Canon refused to fix it. Thousands of people have experienced the same issue -- Google "Canon Lens Error" or "e18 error" and see for yourself.

Great camera for an intermediate user like me. Lots of features for specific types of shots, but fast and easy enough for my technophobe wife when on full automatic.

Shots were pretty good -- a little grainy in low light conditions. Additionally, I think that the JPEG compression seems to be a little flawed since the raw pictures look much, much better in some cases.

Alas, the camera is, however, prone to failure it seems. I got the dreaded "Lens Error, Restart Camera" (also known as the e18 error on previous models). Google either to see the sheer mass of users plagued by this issue.

Canon refused to fix my five-month-old camera when I sent it to them. Absolutely the worst customer service experience I've ever had with an electronics company.

Customer Service

Horrible customer service. Canon refused to repair the camera even though it was only 5 months old! They said that it was "Not Economical to Repair". I feel that Canon is purposely not repairing these to mitigate the huge loses they would experience if they fixed the thousands of Lens Error/e18 Error cameras out there.
