Canon SD1400 IS Canon SD1400 can shoot 720p HD video, which is great to have in such a small camera. Additionally, Canon added an HDMI port with this camera, making it easy to upload the HD video.

Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS is very easy to use even with large hands. The menu interface is straightforward and simple. The controls and buttons are flat and flash within the surface, which gives a smooth appearance and easy reach, also the tactile response is good.

Strength:

Sleek and slim case.
Very lightweight.

Weakness:

Blurred photos are the norm.
Slow and inaccurate focusing.
Poor picture settings controls.

After years of good service with a Canon SD990 I looked forward to the sleeker and smaller profile SD1400. Unfortunately the camera has serious issues focusing on subject matter in good conditions, and worse problems in mixed lighting or dark settings. Any dust or smoke in the setting also ruins the photo (far worse than with the SD990), and the lack of fine control even in Program settings reduces this camera to "hoping I get this one still shot in perfect lighting" type of pictures.

The controls are also a bit different and possibly a bit small for comfortable use in my hands. But the smaller profile is nice because this camera easily goes into a pocket.

As for the comment about waiting for the camera to focus - in Auto mode you can wait for a good 30-45 seconds for the camera to focus on subject matter only to be baffled over why it settles on a very blurred (on the LCD) image. Even if the camera appears to be in focus, the majority of your shots will be blurry or slightly off when you look at them on a computer screen. This has been a real disappointment.

I'll be contacting Best Buy to see if I can do a swap for a different camera.

Strength:

Top-notch HD LCD display. I was amazed by the color-correctness and crispness. This camera takes unbelievable pictures, and the 720p video is very fluid and vibrant.

It's very well made. The build quality is impressive. It's a full aluminum frame (I believe), and it looks and feels like it could take a fair amount of abuse (which it should, considering it's size; it was designed to slip into a pocket and be carried around wherever you go).

Weakness:

Size. It is one of the smallest point-and-shoot cameras made. Sadly, I did lose my first one, but then again, I'm pretty absent-minded. I loved it so much, that I ended up replacing it with the exact same model and color.

If you're prone to losing stuff, do what I ended up doing, and buy a larger case for it, with a strap :D

The reason you aren't getting any pictures in focus is because you're not allowing the camera to focus. It's pretty common knowledge that you have to depress the picture button half-way to auto-focus. Since you don't have much experience with photography, perhaps you should leave the unit on "auto" mode which has worked absolutely without flaw.

This is an excellent camera, that takes amazing shots. The LCD display is so vivid, there isn't any noticeable difference between looking at the screen and looking at the actual subject in view.

Customer Service

Not sure, but I'm told they're very professional.

My last digital camera was a Sanyo T700. The Canon SD1400is is markedly smaller, and the picture quality was about half as good.

Strength:

Very compact

Weakness:

Difficulty focusing

We bought a Canon camera because we had such a good experience with the SD 550. With the SD 1400IS I seldomget a picture that is in focus. The main reason for the purchase was to get the IS feature.
