Canon EOS D30

Well the only thing that most people seemed concerned about is the focusing. My last EOS camera was the original ELAN, and the D30 focus is faster and more accurate. I have also had Minolta MAXXUM 7 and the D30's focus can't touch that camera. On the other hand it's not as bad as most people say it is. I have had pretty good results in low light. It's really all about knowing how to really utalize the focus assist light. The image quality from this camera can not be touched by any other DSLR of the same era, and not even by many of todays "cutting edge" cameras like the olympus E-300, Konica-Minolta Maxxum 7D. Now don't mistake what I am saying for resolution. Obviously both of these cameras beat the D30 in that respect. But in noise, artifacts, morie, and color rendition the D30 still excels. If you are looking for a camera to shoot ultra fast action and print it big, then this is not the camera for you. But if you are looking for a supurb digital photographic tool at a good price that can print upto 11x14 images then this camera would be a great choice. For first time DSLR owners like myself the D30 makes a great, affordable step up. They sell cheap enough ($400-$600, u.s.), that it won't break you to give digital SLR photography a good try. If it's not for you, you can sell the camera easy enough, and if it is for you then hey, you got a great back up for the next DSLR on your list! Lastly when you first pic up the D30 you will be surprised at how solid and sturdy it feels. I have never helad a polycarbonate cvamera that felt as strong as this one. I took a fall on my bike a couple of weeks ago and landed on my D30, which was in a small shoulder bag. It came out without a scratch where other polycarb cameras would have shattered. This is because Canon built a steel frame under the polycarb outer skin of the D30 and it really shows. In the feeling and wieght of this camera. I have a friend with a 20D, and fully loaded up with the same gear, my D30 out wieghs his by a noticable margin. This is a good thing if you wish to hand hold longer lenses, as to a certain point a heavier camera is easier to keep steady.

Image quality. At 3.2mp this camera has resolution that rivals my 5mp dimage 7i. Wieght and durability. No noise at iso100-200 It's a Canon, it's digital, and it has a CMOS sensor.

So far the focus is the only thing that bugs me with this camera, though admittedly not by much.

IF You have lot of time on an ansigment and still need a Digital file for your local newspaper or whatever your client is,then buy this DSLR with no hesitation,although you will need some work in photoshop compared to the newest DSLRs youre one the right way! Its still far far better than any of the NEW 8 Billion Pix rangerfinderdigicameras because the flexibility and workresult youll get from this D30 is so much better in any areas ! SO conclusion>as a PRO back up og photo student camera or just and very serious amateurs going SLR THIS IS IT. The 3 mill sensor IS ALL you need for super PRO prints! BUY IT.

Great value for money (about US$600-650 in the used market) Great prints upto A4 size (I have'nt tried larger prints so far). 'Silky smooth', Noiseless images at ISO100 and very acceptable noise upto ISO400 in reasonable light. Uses less storage space - (more than 130 RAW images on a 512MB CF card) Custom functions allow more flexibility in shooting. Good build quality. Far superior to any 'Prosumer' digital camera I have used in terms of image quality and SLR feel. If you don't intend to print over A4 size photos, this might be the best bargain out there - at least for now. Keep away from the mad rush for more megapixels!

So so AF speed in low light - though better than many amateur film SLRs that I have used

With the Digital Rebel busting the $1K barrier at 6MP, the used market just got too tempting not to make the digital leap. I'd read ad nasueum about the D30's poor AF performance, but heck, at $600, how could I lose? I just can't say enough good things about this camera. The digital format encourages you to take more chances, and one's photography skills can't help but improve. I've found myself pulling out my old texts for lighting and composition. Might first set of 4 X 6 prints [ISO 100 & small, fine JPEG] were absolutely fabulous. I'm holding on to my EOS 1n, but only because of the snob appeal of owning a "pro"--if somewhat obsolete--camera body. If you own EOS glass, this is a great, fairly cost effective way, to test the digital waters. Now, when the 10D's start showing up used......

-Instant feedback and gratification -Outstanding image quality -Not pro, but well built with good layout -Fairly easy transition for EOS film based users -Accurate metering

-Doesn't support A-TTL or TTL with 540EZ -AF problems in low EV (Use Cfn 2.1 or 2.3 and focus manually if all else fails) -No spot metering -No viewfinder shutter -WICKED, steep learning curve with the editing & imaging software for those of us who are computer challenged

If this was the Digital SLR to convert EOS users, then its working! Gives a lovley smooth image from its 3 megapixel sensor, and anyone whos use a Canon EOS could pick it up and use it right away. The only thing stopping it from getting a 5 star rating is its autofocus... its awful! Why does it wait before starting focus or following a moving object in AI-Servo mode?? Even my 17 year old eos 1 beats it in this respect...

Fantastic image quality right out of the camera, even better if you play with it in photoshop. Canon EOS Lenses. No-need-for-instuctions user interface. Very little shutter lag. E-TTL flash built in. A free 1.6x teleconverter :-P

That AF system! 5+ megapixels would be nice (but thats what a 10D's for ;-))
