from Fort Worth Camera Su Summary: I will make this as short and brief as I can, all the tech stuff is on the net. I still own and use my D200. The 51 point AF system is great, however, I hardly use it. Image quality may be a little better than the D200, maybe, 1500-1700 dollars better, doubt it. I bought the camera with the battery grip and the 18-200mm lens. I like the menu set up and menu banks in the D200 better, I have used both bodies with my Nikon 80-400mm lens and the D200 takes better photographs with that lens IMO. I thought at first it was just because I was used to the D200 but over time and using very similar settings the D200 still looks better with that lens. The 18-200mm lens produced great images with both bodies. The battery grip cost almot 250 dollars, a little high in my book. The continous shooting does smoke, it flames through them and sport photographers should love this as long as they have a fast lens to go along with that speed, like the 70-200mm f2.8.
I am not really going to waste time with boring details as u can read pro reviews and form your own opinion about this. I am writing this for people who are considering the upgrade. I bought this camera and it is a great camera, it has some minor issues, mine seems to shoot hot in bright sunlight, an easy fix with exposure comp. It took a little getting used to after using the D200 for so long, not an issue, more time with it and just like the D200 you get used to it.
However, that said, if I could do it again, nope, would not have bought it, the 2500 dollars was not worth it to replace my D200, which I decided to keep. Get a D90 instead, some glass and wait for the next generation D400 or whatever it is going to be, I was one of those guys that bought the next gen everytime it was released, no more, the marekting gurus are good, they throw some new bells and whistles out there and I trip over my feet to get to the shop,,,,,then I use it...mmmm, my old rig was doing a fine job.
IMO, if you can find a D200 and find it at a great price, get one, save the coin and get some decent glass, I have found the investment in the glass outweighs any other investment you can make, in the long run it does not matter, soon the D300 will be old school and and there will be another in the spotlight stealing the thunder, the glass will be there waiting to attach itself to whatever you buy and make some great images................save the cash,,,get the glass. Strengths: 51 point AF, frame speed, live view(though not as handy as on the D90) 12mp(?)
Alloy body with seals, Customizable menu settings and save options. Weaknesses: Price, Batter grip, price and design, 12mp(?), my D200 10mp was just fine for my work, made prints 16x20, no problems Similar Products Used: D70,D80,D90,D300,Fuji S3 Customer Service: NA
