Sigma SD14 Digital SLRs

Sigma SD14 Digital SLRs

DESCRIPTION

14 megapixel high resolution image sensor The Foveon X3® direct image sensor featured in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR can capture all primary RGB colours at each and every pixel, insuring the capture of full and complete colour. This third generation direct image sensor with 14-mega pixels incorporates many improvements over its very popular predecessors, SD9 and SD10, introduced to the market in 2002 and 2003 respectively. This 14 megapixel direct image sensor records natural rich detail on a par with film.

Strength:

Image Quality
Dynamic Range
Color Accuracy
Film like realism
ISO 50 setting
Great Shutter
Bright Viewfinder
Very solid build
Great lenses much less than Nikon or Canon but as good or better quality
Sigma Photo Pro is a great RAW converter software tool

Weakness:

JPEG quality is about equal to an 8 mega pixel camera
slow writing to the card
limited battery life
poor performance at high ISO settings
quirky AF
limited to sigma lenses only
Adobe RAW will not interpret SIGMA raw files

Wonderful camera as an art tool. Not as fast, flexible, versatile or easy to use as some of my other cameras (Olympus, Pentax and Sony). No scene modes, slow to write to the CF card, RAW is the only real choice (JPEG is only average and can be bettered for less money), limited battery life, quirky AF (must use care). That said, when the picture is taken at 50 ISO and compared to ANY other digital camera out there, the SIGMA wins hands down. Not even the Canon and Nikon pro variants come close. The 3D film like results of the FOVEON sensor prove that it is inherently a better technology than a Bayer sensor. If you are careful about your shots and not focused on point and shoot use or rapid fire sports or low light photography, then this is the best available tool on the market. It is designed for the photographer who photography as an art. It produces the finest pictures available today.

Strength:

Can easly remove the IR cut filter. And can be used for IR photography with great success. Cost is low and image quality is outstanding. Better than the Canon below ISO 200.

Weakness:

Lots of noise at ISO 800 and above. Slow Buffer, very slow shooting in raw in high speed. VERY SLOW. Battery life is poor compared to the Canon.

I have to say I purchased this camera to shoot IR. This is something you can't do with other DSLR cameras. I can shoot at 50 ISO I can still shoot IR point and click and do it hand held. However you do need to guess on framing your shot. You can’t see through the view finder with the IR filter on it. Also I own a Canon 40D that is a superior camera in almost everyway. The 40D is much faster and a great sports camera. And much better at high ISO. The Sigma suffers above ISO 400. But it still can be used at ISO 800. Where the 40D is usable at ISO 1600.
But I must mention that at ISO 200 and below the Sigma image quality is superior to the Canon. Yes that is what I said. better color and contrast and that 3d effect you get with a really good image. I am told it is the dynamic range.

Strength:

Sensor sharpness, nice colors, easy to use after a while.

Weakness:

Slow writing using raw, but you may use jpeg which is of course lower quality when blown up. need an extra battery. An external flash would make this camera "perfect"

A very nice camera. come as a bargain with the 18-200mm os lens. Easy to use. I never imagined that a dslr is this easy to use after all. Although ive been using my hg10 hd camcorder for some time. Really blown away by the quality shots from this camera. I love this more than my camcorder now. At first, i was hesitant to buy it because it lacks live view. But the shots are really good. You can even convert a shot which is totally black to useful stuffs for internet after post processing.
