Silvestri S4 Reviews

A portable 4x5 camera with with the traditional Silvestri capabilities. A reversible body makes full use of the 40mm vertical shift in either direction. Accepts reducing backs for 6x7, 6x9 and 6x12. It also accesses the Silvestri Flexi-bellows, which adds swings and tilts to the rise/fall movement.

Summary:I have used the Silversri for about 5 years, it is an amazing 5x4 camera - It is of excellent construction & the 2 lenses I have used ( XL 47 & 72mm Schneider) are as sharp as a razor.

Strengths:I can not think of a Large Format Camera that is a s simple to set up..... Within a few minutes of putting it on the tripos, you are set up & ready to go !

With NO BELLOWS to worry about, the front & rear standard are extremely rigid,
and with 40mm of Rising / Drop front, it will cope with almost anything you can throw at it .

Weaknesses:The S4 lacks the extensive movements of my Sinar P2, but for portability when out on site, it can not be bettered.

Try one........You will not regret it !

Thanks for the large format review, Jim! We don't get many large format equipment reviews and I'm always excited when we do. Please post more reviews for your other gear. We also have a lot of large format lenses listed in the lens user reviews. You might also want to take a look at our Film Photography forum. I'm sure the guys in there would appreciate having someone with your experience sharing :-)
