Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $50.00 from Circut City

Summary:

I purchased the xD-Picture Card™/SmartMedia™ USB Reader/Writer, but have been unable to use it. On a MAC, the hardware is not recognised by the operating system when you plug it in. On the PC, the install sheild identifys that the device is not certified by MSFT as compatible to the operating system, and I am reluctant to override it (an option) and take a chance on fouling up the PC. Very disappointed the product no compatible with common hardware and operating systems

Strengths:

Unknown, cannot use

Weaknesses:

Not compatible with Microsoft XP or WIN2000 operating systems, and not recognised by MAC

Similar Products Used:

Picked up a similiar device (no brand name on wrapper) shopping in SF, it works fine. No drivers, no install, just plug it in and use it. Works fine on PC, XP and WIn2000 and on MAC

Customer Service:

Unable to reach Olympus and resolve.

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $60.00 from Gran Canaria, Spain

Summary:

I run Windows XP, and have various USB connections, so I need to run them through a USB hub. Attempting to install the drivers, I found that it kept coming up with an error message. It finally installed, and I followed the instructions carefully. I was extremely disappointed to read that the XD card reader may not work via a USB hub. When I tested it, it wouldn't load the photos. I then tried to run it on it's own, directly into the USB connection, which worked ok, BUT, when I ejected it (the way the manual instucts you to) my computer blue screened, and rebooted. I have another Packard Bell 6 in 1 card reader, and had no trouble with this at all. Not only that, but it was 20 Euros cheaper, and reads 4 more cards, and connects via the USB hub.

Strengths:

It reads XD cards.

Weaknesses:

You have to close the lid for it to read a card. It only reads 2 cards. To eject the cards, you have to do it through "My Computer". Can't run it through a USB hub.
