from Merkle Camera - Cana Summary:Having already purchased the JOBO GigaVu Pro Evolution and being on the whole very happy with the unit, I purchased the JOBO Giga Vu Extreme(JGVEx) (160Gb HDD).
The unit is very well made and does exactly what is says on the 'tin'. The plus side for me is that both these JOBO units are able to decode ACTUAL raw files, not just the embedded jpeg from the raw file.
File copying speed from CF card to the JGVEx is around 9Mb/sec, not too shabby, maybe faster with UDMA cards, I wouldn't know as I don't possess any.
Anyone that has had 'issues' in the past with CF card failure or has used other portable image back-up devices which have been 'cheap & cheerful' yet not very reliable, need not worry too much about the JOBO units. The software runs on Linux and the interface between CF card (or SDHC card with the JGVEx) and the JOBO has been rock solid in the field.
The actual display is a very bright and contrasty LCD made by 'SHARP' and also is 'colour-calibrated'.
Another useful aspect to the JOBO is that it allows incremental back-ups (so no duplication of images get transferred). I am already employing the JGVEx in this capacity and use it to back up my JOBO GVPE while in the field.
One last nice feature of JOBO's firmware upgrades is that you could realistically buy a JOBO Giga Vu Pro Evolution and then upgrade the firmware to turn the unit into a JOBO Giga Vu Extreme (the extreme gives you support for the JOBO 'Photo-GPS' geo-tagging accessory).
The JGVEx also come with an SDHC to CF card convertor.
On the whole a reliable, well thought out and executed product. Strengths:View actual raw files.
GREAT screen.
Fast transfers.
USBOTG.
Works as a multimedia player(Mpeg 1/2 and mp3 support).
Very well made, the unit is surrounded by a thick rubber casing.
Linux.
OS NOT stored on the HDD. Weaknesses:Definitely price, once again JOBO has the SRP for the 160Gb unit at a whopping $899 USD !
Not the most intuitive menu layout (I had no problems, but when I gave the unit to a friend, he didn't like the menu layout; thought it was a bit 'clunky')
Slow to 'boot' initially (circa 20 seconds). Similar Products Used:JOBO giga Vu Pro Evolution. Customer Service:Not had to use, but firmware and manuals available from the JOBO website.
