Review 1 of 3

Price Paid:  $200.00 from computergeeks

Summary:

I was heading to Europe for a 1month vacation and didn't want to take my laptop. I shoot about 250 to 500MB of pictures on an average day (5MP camera, typically use bracketing). So 30days * 400mB = 12GB of photos. I use MS Pro media and this was only reader at the time to support that. I bought the standalone device and added in a spare 40gB laptop HDD I had. The great thing about it is all the different media formats it supports. I was traveling with friends, and everyone was able to use it (just about everybody had digital camers...using different memory formats). As I always carry around enough memory cards to last through one day of shooting, I mainly used it at night when I got back to wherever I was staying. It can take a while to dump 512mb of photos, but since I just kicked it off when I went to bed, this was not an issue.

Strengths:

Fairly compact. One of cheapest devices around. About 70% cheaper than comparable iPod or similar top brand devices. Reads Memory Stick Pro media. Reads many other memory formats. Acts just like USB HDD as far as Win XP is concerned. Can use a spare laptop HDD so long as FAT formatted (doesn't recognize NTFS). Super easy interface. Just hit a button and off it goes, copying your files over.

Weaknesses:

Battery life is not that good. I could sometimes, just barely, copy off my 512mb MS Pro card on a single charge. You should just plan on using it only when you have AC-power available. You have to format the laptop HDD before putting it in the device. This means you need a way to power up and format the HDD besides the VP2060. Also, I was only able to format my 40G HDD to 32GB. Some sort of FAT limitation.

Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $225.00 from e-bay

Summary:

I didn't want to spend $2000 on flash cards so I found this gadget. I can take it on the road when taking pictures and download from my flash cards in the middle of no-where without the need for a mains socket to power the drive. The Cs-Drive can read from almost any flash card (CS,CF,MMC etc). It can be connected to your PC and be used as 6-in-1 card reader and even just as portable harddrive through a USB2.0 connection. I use this to shuttle data between home and work. It works just like the flash memory sticks and is detected by Windows ME/XP/2000 without any drivers. I've seen similar products with LCD screens for viewing and even editing, but at much higher prices. This unit is the perfect solution for me as I shoot in RAW mode (8MB per picture) and edit on my PC later. If I would have to buy a new one, it would be the X's Drive again.

Strengths:

No need for 110/220V Can be used during long trips or vacation 6-in-1, can read all cards 40GB of storage can be used as portable hard drive LCD for transfer status

Weaknesses:

I don't expect more than it does, so I have not any weaknesses. Good product!

Review 3 of 3

Price Paid:  $117.00 from comutergeeks.com

Summary:

The VP-2060 is a pretty good digital wallet, featuring USB-2 support and a cheap sub-$100 price. It replaces the VP-2030 which had no LCD screen and a USB1.1 connection. Quite compact and light.

Strengths:

Cheap, cheap price USB2: I definitely got faster transfers than USB1.1, however hit the 15GB hard disk transfer rate. I 1syt tried a 2GB disk but got ~ USB1.1 xfer rates, disk too slow. 6-in-1 connectors: Reads all media, no adaptor needed. LiIon battery: It's custom but lasts a while. usable as USB hard disk HD easy to install. Comes with decent carry case. Auto switch off. Windows FAT32 compatible. Format and go.

Weaknesses:

Power button: not recessed. Can be triggered if badly packed. HD full bug? I tried an experiment with a small parrtition, and corrupted the whole disk when going over capacity when reading media. Maybe a mistake from me. No biggie too since you'll have plenty of space. LCD: only displays status. Can't see pics. Can't navigate the directory so can't check what's copied. Status does say xfer fail/success. HD format: No USB disk can be formated through USB, so must buy preformated HD, or format on laptop or on PC using an IDE adaptator. No NTFS support (WinXP reads Fat32 but doesn't doFAT32 formatting :( )

Similar Products Used:

The original 3GB digital wallet. It sucked because HD format was custom, could not change HD. Also USB 1.1 and way more expensive :(

Customer Service:

No experience. Expect none :)
