Review 1 of 4

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

I am not so much a Imacon owner as I am an Imacon user. I work as a digital technican and I have experience with other professional grade equipment from Kodak and Hiedelberg. This scanner is lacking when I have to scan from a 35mm negative. The grain structure is obscenely eggagerated. At first I was instructed to use my predecessor's user- defined settings. When I used his setting, I got unsatisfied customers. I have played around with creating new negative settings. I have also played around with the grain limit slider bar, as well as all of the others in the Unsharp Mask window, but still I feel this scanner cannot do justice to reproducing the grain structure of a 35mm negative. Show me how I'm wrong.

Strengths:

Nice scan from Slide.

Weaknesses:

bad scan from negative

Similar Products Used:

Kodak Professional negative scanner Hiedelberg LinoColor flatbed

Review 2 of 4

Price Paid:  $14.00 from Midwest Imaging Products

Summary:

It's a very big investment to make for a one-person operation like mine. But you usually get what you pay for. In this case I think it was money very well spent. My friend has the smaller Imacon at his studio and is very happy with it.

Strengths:

Very well made. Sturdy, simple to use. A lot of good common sense seems to have gone into this design. It is a pleasure to use in all respects.

Weaknesses:

At this point I think the only weakneses are on my part. I need to use it more to fine tune MY scanning ability.

Similar Products Used:

I wasted $7000.00 on my last scanner. It worked less than a year and developed sick software, no help from customer service. Wish I would have bought an Imacon then! Have owned an 840 U-Max... Agfa Duo-scan.... U-Max PL 3000.

Customer Service:

The dealer was great! Customer service has not been required yet.

Review 3 of 4

Model Reviewed:
FlexTight Precision II

Summary:

A really good value that delivers top quality for the user that knows his hardware and knows what he wants to get from his orginals.

Strengths:

This scanner is a really good scanner for the money. The software is easy to understand, real easy for photographers - that know their RGB curves. The scan quality is among the best you get, when the user "knows" the scanner and the software. Its fast, real fast and does a good job scanning negs, although you allways need to really tweak those curves to get a decent neg scan. But that is the case on every scanner I have tried and I feel that the Precision does a better job than most of them.

Weaknesses:

Noise problems can be seen, mainly on dense 35mm negs (highlight) or slides. This is easy to fix - upgrade to ColorFlex 1.9.5 and run the CCD calibration process. After that 99% of the problem is gone. If you still see noise you will have problems scanning this orginal on every CCD scanner. The "auto" color-analysing is not as good as in other software packages as LinoColor or Scitex. But I dont have a problem with this since I like to be in total control. To get the most out of the Precision the user needs to spend some time with the scanner, get to know the diffrent scan modes and his orginals.

Customer Service:

In my case the customer service (directly from Denmark) has been brilliant.

Model Reviewed:
FlexTight Precision II

Summary:

You can save money by buying a used or rebuilt drum scanner and get better quality.

Strengths:

Software is very easy to use. Does a better job of scanning negs than transparencies.

Weaknesses:

Has real problems with introducing scanner noise into shadow and three quarter tone areas. Also serious problem with optical flare when scanning images that are medium to high contrast. Dust problems require lots of time dust busting.

Customer Service:

So so.
