Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $241.00 from ProVantage.com

Model Reviewed:
Scanjet 5500C

Summary:

A USB 2.0 photo scanning speed demon! Big, loud and made for serious 3x5 and 4x6 batch photo scanning via the APF (Auto Photo Feeder). Scanned 5,000 photos in first 7 days. Bells and whistles including direct scanning to e-mail etc. Once getting past the software issues related to APF scanning this machine can't be beat for the price. With rebate my final cost was $191.00.

Strengths:

Extremely fast preview and scanning on my 800Mhz Duron 98SE Machine with USB 2.0. Very minimal jamming with good photo paper(1 out of 80 to 100 scans). Was able to do off sizes (Polaroids etc.) as well but not recommended by HP. Cropping in preview window a plus. Default settings were perfect for APF scanning. Under 30 seconds per scan!!!

Weaknesses:

APF scanning software very buggy. Had to learn to keep photos in the order scanned to account for lost files but thumbs were preserved, go figure. Expect this problem and be prepared for it. Check out Yahoo groups for scanjet 5500C for more helpful info for dealing with quirks. Forget slide scanning, extremely slow even with the special adapter.

Similar Products Used:

Umax 2200scsi/USB 1.1, Vivatar parallel port, more antiques etc.

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $249.00 from Best Buy

Model Reviewed:
5500C

Summary:

Easy setup, and the Automatic Photo Feeder works great. If your primary concern is scanning photos, this machine is hard to beat for the price. No lifting the lid and smearing the glass. Just load up the APF, click scan photo and let it work. I am running Windows 2K Pro SP4 on a P4 1.8 512m.

Strengths:

APF, Easy Setup.

Weaknesses:

Does not do legal size. This is more important to me than all the idiot buttons most new scanners have.

Similar Products Used:

Mustek, Visioneer 8500.
