Review 1 of 36

Price Paid:  $0.00 from Came FREE with book.

Summary:

Product reviewed: Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 4.0.

When I opened it for the first time, I had no previous experience with image-editing. PhotoDeluxe seemed very complicated, but after a few days of experimenting, I learned how to use it efficiently. It’s actually fairly simple. Since then, I have acquired more powerful image-editing programs, but continue to occasionally use this one for the following reasons:

#1. Semi-transparent text/icons can be added quickly and efficiently, such as a watermark.

#2. PhotoDeluxe boots up faster than Paint Shop.

But still, I prefer to use Paint Shop or GIMP whenever possible.

Strengths:

~FREE.
~Easy-to-use.
~A wide selection of features, including special-effect.
~Relatively fast in booting-up, means no long wait.
~Smart-select tool, very handy for tracing around objects in the image.
~Aspect-ratio cropping. (Matches the aspect ratio for the intended print size, such as 4x6 inch, 8x10 inch, etc.).

Weaknesses:

~After intense use, it tends to freeze, and I’m forced to shut the program down.
~Not very many options when exporting a photo as a JPEG.
~There is no image metadata browser, and this has proven inconvenient.
~No compression-preview when saving as a JPEG.
~Images look grainy when opened, but once exported, they look quite different. (If your photo looks grainy in PhotoDeluxe, it will likely look better once exported).
~Only one undo/redo step. Means that you cannot undo/redo an edit other than the previous one.
~Not a very good resizing method. (Drag the photo’s corners in).
~In order to create greeting cards, calendars or insert icons you must place the CD into the computer’s drive. If you happen to lose the disc, good luck with your crippled software.

Similar Products Used:

~Arcsoft PhotoStudio 2000.
~Corel Paint Shop Pro 9. (version 9.02).
~GIMP image editor. (version 2.4.5).

~Other photo-related programs. (Photo-library, panorama-stitching, etc.).

Customer Service:

I found out that Adobe no longer provides support on this piece of software.

Review 3 of 36

Price Paid:  $48.00

Summary:

Since purchasing a new computer with the O/S of Windows 2000, I have had nothing but TROUBLE with Adobe Photo Deluxe. I could not recommend anyone with a newer operating system to purchase this product. I have received countless error messages, not enough hard drive space messages (despite having 50Gig unused space) and worst of all, contstant ''performed an illegal action'' messages. While using Photo Deluxe with Windows 2000, I am having to restart my computer 2 to 4 times per day. I can get no Adobe technical support without paying dearly for it: $25+ per request. In the chat room on their site, I find that my exact difficulties are not isolated. Their product was not formulated for Windows 2000, and at this point, those of us with a new computer are left in a lurch. I am currently searching for a Win 2000 compatible photo software pkg.

Strengths:

Although no manual is offered, the program is easy to get around, and the various tools are self-explanatory.

Weaknesses:

All sorts of glitches with the Windows 2000 operating system.

Similar Products Used:

Picture It, Adobe Corel, Micrografx

Review 5 of 36

Summary:

I've been using this product for over a year now. It has been a real help to my web design. The best thing I like about 4.0 is, I can take an Image from my digital camera, at any resolution and shrink it down for a web site really fast! I will continue to use it for this reason. A few days ago I went and bot Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 I will have to say, this program has a lot in it. For the price of Adobe 4.0 I will have to say it may not have as much as Paint shop, but it kicks butt for simple web design. I will recomend this product for any first time user of Imaging. It is a great starter kit for your collection. So if your looking for a good basic Imaging product, buy Adobe Photo Deluxe 4.0 and I would like to say one more thing. I'm glad I found a program that will convert bmp's, into Jpeg format really quick and easy.

Strengths:

It seems to be simple enough to figure out for yourself, it has all the basics you could ask for. the price is great!

Weaknesses:

I will have to say, Uses lots of memory! and dont try to install on old win95.....you'll have to to go to the Adobe site and download a file called GLU32.DLL and DirectX Full installation. but for the newer o/s no problem.
