Review 1 of 5

Price Paid:  $260.00 from B&H

Summary:

An interesting addition to my flash collection. It works as intended with my 100 2.8 macro, evenly lighting the subject even at f-stops up to 32. It''s lack of E-TTL doesn''t present a problem. The exposures are accurate. Much less expensive that the newer ringlight, but for me it is perfectly satisfactory. One interesting thing you can do with it is shoot portraits, particularly if the subject is far from a wall or other background. If a subject is too close to a wall, you get a halo shadow around them that is unattractive. The light itself is flat and even which can be interesting for portraits, but you are likely to get severe redeye if you shoot a portrait indoors. This is not the main use of the ringlight, of course, so it is unfair to call this a defect or weakness. You can turn one of the flash heads off if you want to have a little more texture in the photos. There really doesn''t seem any reason to buy the more expensive E-TTL version of this ringlight to me.

Strengths:

Good strength and exposure for macro, fun to use occasionally for portraits, though not really it''s main uses.

Weaknesses:

red eye with people shots indoors.

Similar Products Used:

Many flashes, no ringlights.

Customer Service:

Not used

Review 2 of 5

Summary:

Complaining that ring lighting is flat is like complaining that the sky is blue... its supposed to be that way. To that point one thing I have done is tape a piece of ND filter over one side or the other of the ring light to allow for a little more modeling of the overall look. Not exceptionally powerful but for my purposes it works great.

Strengths:

Inexpensive
Easy to use
Switchable lighting

Weaknesses:

Lighting is flat but thats what a ring light does

Review 3 of 5

Summary:

I'm a dentist. I love the use of this flash in dental macro photo with my EF 100mm, f/2.8 macro USM and my EOS A2. Despite the weaknesses of this flash if compared with for example MR 14 -EX, the use for dental macro photo is easy and take very good results. If you want a simple practical and objective flash for macro photo, I recommend it.

Strengths:

*TTL
*Easy to use
*Excellent for dental macro
*AF auxiliary light
*Flash Exposure Confirmation Signal lights for 2 sec.
*Flash tubes which can be switched on or off independently
*Angel of view - 80

Weaknesses:

*No E-TTL
*No manual Flash output (e.g.: Left/Right tube 1:8, 8:1)
*No Flash exposure comp.
*No 2nd curtain sync.

Review 4 of 5

Price Paid:  $250.00 from Redlands Camera

Summary:

Gets the job done. Now that I have an EOS-1V and 550EX, I'll save for the ML-14 ring light and get more realistic lighting effects for macro photography.

Strengths:

Easy to use. Great for cosmetic before and after photos in dentistry.

Weaknesses:

Not really all that great for other macro applications besides dentistry. Lighting is flat.
