Strength:

Sharpness, ease of focusing, overall does all you could expect.

Weakness:

None so far.

I was looking for a faster 90mm lens to replace a Schneider 90mm super Angulon, which I fonnd difficult to focus, even with a loupe. The Nikkor 90mm SW f4.5 was listed at MXV at a very good price because of "marks" on the lens coating. In fact, the marks are almost invisble and do not affect lens perfomance at all. In every other respect, the lens is in very good condition. I think I found a bargain. To my delight, I can focus this lens easily, even without a loup. Light fall off seems much less obvious than with the Schneider, and results are very sharp, with excellent colour. It really is not that big either. A great, solidly made lens.

Strength:

Excellent sharpness and contrast. Capable of amazing definition with Fuji Velvia if accurately focussed.Easy to focus.

Weakness:

This is a lot of glass screwed to the front and back of a small shutter. With the stresses of backpacking the shutter can distort so the front and rear plates are no longer parallel. This wreaks havoc with lens performance. The cure is a new shutter.

One of the best and most versatile wide angle lenses for 4x5. Easier to use than the shorter focal lengths.

Model Reviewed: Nikkor SW 90mm f/4.5

Strength:

Pin-sharp, great coverage, high contrast.

Weakness:

High contrast.

I've used the lens on my 6x17cm camera for the past 7 years and more recently on my Toyo 4x5 camera - all with no problems at all. Very little loss of illumination at the edges - even tried it on the 8x10 and it almost covers the format! Nikkor lenses are high contrast which can be a little deadly in combination with a film like Velvia and the bright Australian sun, but when shooting color work, it always seems better to have the contrast rather than not!
