Review 1 of 6

Price Paid:  $0.00 from BH or Adorama

Summary:

Overall an excellent lens. It's the only SLR 24mm f/1.4 that I know of, and because of this it is capable of creating some wonderful images. It initially was my standard lens of my Canon 20D translating into an unusually perfect focal length. Then I bought the 5D and it is still my favorite walk around lens due to its unique abilities. Colors and contrast are excellent, and the f/1.4 makes for some fun images. Obviously when stopped down it becomes a stunning wide angle lens.

For those of you thinking about purchasing this lens. It's amazing, but it is only for diciplined photographers who ENJOY prime lenses and really understand how to use a wide angle lens. I would definitely make d*** sure 24mm is the focal length for you before buying it.

Strengths:

F/1.4!!! This makes for a superb and intersting street, walk around lens. You can use it in low light, and you can get a shallow depth of field. I don't think there is another SLR lens on the planet that can do what this lens does with that combination. Distortion is well controlled, it has rock solid construction, and it definitely an L lens.

Weaknesses:

The lens obviously vignettes at f/1.4 on the 5D. However at that aperture you're creating very expression images dealing with background blur so honestly I still like to the look of it. Further, any respectable photo editing packages gives you a slider to fix the vignetting. Since this lens pre-dates digital stuff, you'll see some color frindging occasionally which is also easily fixed. Honestly though, these two problems you'll see on most lenses except in the magic standard and telephoto focal lengths. Just keep reminding yourself this is a 24mm lens and be d*** impressed. The focusing could be faster, but obivously you're not shooting sports with this thing, and I've never felt like I missed a shot due to the focusing.

Similar Products Used:

I don't really think there are comparable products. I guess the Nikon 24-70ish zoom and the Tamron 28-75mm. However neither of those are doing f/1.4 giving this lens an often unique look.

Customer Service:

Never used them.

Review 2 of 6

Price Paid:  $1250.00

Summary:

the 24mm 1.4 does perform very well wide open on a film camera and at f/4 this lens is as good as any lens can possibly get.

On the 20D however this lens camera combination is a DISASTER- IT is TOTALY UNACCEPTABLE by any standard - just shoot side by side same pictures at f/1.4 and f/4 - you will be horrified and shocked- you must use this lens at f2.8 to get usable results-

I purchased this lens and a D20 at the same time believing that it was the best possible combination- unfortunately this lens has little value until stooped down to f2.8.
-

Strengths:

On the 5D however this lens performs very well.

Weaknesses:

TOTALY UNACCEPTABLE on a D20 - heavy and expensive

Review 3 of 6

Price Paid:  $900.00 from Used

Summary:

I purchased this lens for a specific shoot (waterfront at night) and it performed extraordinary. Since this is not my usual gig, I was thinking about selling it once the shoot was over, but I changed my mind. I used this lens twice now on some nature, landscape walks and I was extremely satisfied with its' performance. This lens I will keep.

Strengths:

Super on color, contrast, and tack sharp.

Weaknesses:

None

Similar Products Used:

Canon 24/2.8, Sigma 20/1.8.

Customer Service:

Excellent. Not on a lens but on my D60.

Review 5 of 6

Price Paid:  $1168.00 from Delta International

Summary:

An unsung hero in the Canon lineup. One of the sharpest lenses produced by Canon and I''ve tried them all under the 300mm 2.8. Immediate focus reponse speed, quiet and NO distortion on a digital camera. Color reproduction is "L" class all the way. THE lens to own if you are looking to complement a 16-35 zoom range with a lens that will get you there in a low light pinch.

Strengths:

Solid Build Fast Autofocus speeds NO digital camera distortion Super sharp imaging The Speed you Need in low light

Weaknesses:

None
