Review 1 of 8

Price Paid:  $160.00 from photovision, Berne (

Summary:

I just bought the 2.0/100mm lens because of its low price (I already have the 1.4/85mm) and was surprised about the excellent quality, both optical and mechanical (in both fields much better than my 1.4/85mm, old version). First portait shots taken under poorest light conditions gave excellent results: perfect sharpness, no reflexes, just superb. NOT a collectors lens, but my new favourite in the 100mm range.

Strengths:

perfect mechanical and optical performance

Weaknesses:

no IF, AF relatively slow (even with Dynax 9)

Similar Products Used:

Minolta 1.4/85mm; 2.8/100mm Macro, Nikkor 2.5/105mm

Customer Service:

Minolta customer service is not really excellent in Switzerland :-(

Review 2 of 8

Price Paid:  $450.00

Summary:

I thought a lot about what lens to choose when I changed to AF last year. The 85/1.5 or the 100/2. Ultimately three things let me choose this 100/2: it was cheaper, it was sharper (comparing the tests on the internet, the 100/2 at f/2was sharper than the 85/1.4 at f/2!) and it didn't look as impressive and professional as the larger (in width) 85/1.4. Until now I haven't had any regrets. the lens is very sharp from f/2 and up.

Strengths:

Sharpness is awesome, it takes 55 mm filters, just as my other lenses, it is fairly light, focussing is not too slow for me.

Weaknesses:

None

Customer Service:

Not relevant

Review 4 of 8

Price Paid:  $0.00 from HK

Summary:

Best value Minolta Portrait/Stage lens.

Strengths:

1st generation Minolta AF lens style means it is built almost as good as the current G-lens. Very sharp from edge to edge even at F2, as good as my latest Minolta AF 100F2.8 macro. Much better value than the Minolta 85F1.4

Weaknesses:

Discontinued Slow AF (But still quick enough on my 600si) Have to use thin filer (Minolta brand) to avoid vignetting at F2

Similar Products Used:

Minolta 100F2.8D macro Minolta 80-200F2.8G HS Tamron 90F2.8 macro

Customer Service:

No experience

Review 5 of 8

Price Paid:  $350.00 from http://www.foka.nl/

Summary:

This is an absolute great lens, as good as the leica's! The f/2.0 is a (very very) little soft, but gives an equal view from edge to edge. Also at f/2.0 a (very) little dark corner, but not noticable in practical photography. From f/2.8 all openings are usable without any doubt. Great value for money!

Strengths:

- Very good from edge to edge!
- All openings usable, even the wide open
- Great focal length to use
- f/2.0 makes a very bright viewfinder

Weaknesses:

- Slow AF

Similar Products Used:

Leica Elmarit 90/2.8

Customer Service:

Not needed for this lens, but Minolta Netherlands were very helpful in other cases
