Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Standard zoom lens with the same optical system, construction, and exterior as the EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 V USM. The difference is that it uses a DC motor instead of a USM to drive the AF.

Strength:

-Solid build quality, it still works after more abuse than i've put on any of my other lenses. -Fast Auto Focusing -Very good image quality at 28mm, though average to sub average at other focal lenghts. -cheap price -extremely light weight, makes an excellent pair with a rebel for a light weight travel kit.

Weakness:

-High pitched Auto focusing squeal that has only developed after years of use. -slow (but then again none of the zooms in a comparative price range are f2.8 constant aperature either) -only average image quality at any focal length other than 28mm

This is not a bad product for the money. This has been my main lens for over five years now and has seen plenty of abuse in that time. While some will overly mock this lens as being pathetic, it is what it is, and for under $100 its a d*** good performer. Its not a fast lens, nor is it overly sharp, though neither are any of canon's non "L" standard zooms, like the 28-135 or either of the 28-105's. As far as build quality goes, I really cannot complain. I've had this lens longer than a friend has had his 24-85, and his lens needs servicing, even though I am more noticably harder on my equiptment than him. This lens has a suprisingly excellent build quality. As far as autofocusing goes, it is really quite fast, not much slower than my 200mm f2.8 II "L" with USM. My only complaint about it is that after 5 years of heavy use it has now developed an extremely noisy high pitched squeal.

Strength:

i cant really say

Weakness:

many

This is a plain normal lense which often come as part of a Rebel kit or other consumer kits.Sometimes you can get very lucky and get very good samples, and get great great images for no cost. Mine wasnt that good and it was therfore muddy and not so good. I prefer at any time the EF35-80 mk.2(non usm-made in japan version) which threaded well can make very good prints.

Strength:

58mm filters very common light, portable

Weakness:

Not the most solid construction. Prints a little soft. Again, Canon could include hoods with its lenses like almost everyone else.

This lens came as a kit with my Rebel 2000 and it did a surprisingly good job. It was a good lense to learn on because of its relative ease to use and decent quality glass. It also allowed me to build my system around 58mm filters. The 28mm f/1.8, 28-105 USM, and 75-300 IS USM all use 58mm filters. That saved on money. This lens is good for indoor and outdoor use. Your hand makes a good hood when outside.

Strength:

Nice lens for average shooter Good pictures Nice zoom range

Weakness:

Pictures lack detail feels cheap

nice lens. People say, that it has a sluggish af mechanism. You know, no matter what I've taken pictures of, it never was a problem. Most people do not even need the af as fast as lightning, though usually state it as weakness. Yes, there is some loss of sharpness. Yes, the it might have been better. If I had a chance to sell this lens at a max possible price, I would get the Sigma 28-135 instead. Unfortunatelly, it came with camera...
