from B&H Summary: What a hidden treasure! Why Canon has replaced it with an inferior version that is less solid, slower and with a plastic mount confuses me. I bought this to use on an EOS 33, which is a backup to my EOS1V and L series kit of superb lenses. This lens was for convenience when shooting in the street or when I needed to use a compact kit with built in flash.
Well all I can say is that the 28-105USM is excellent - compact, fast enough, quite, sharp and has fine colour, detail and minimal distortion. It is outstanding value for money.
At all f stops and focal lengths it performs admirably.
I took it around China last December and in some cases I cannot tell which shots were taken with my 24-70 f2.8L and this lens!!
The focal length range combined with its widest f stops is a very good mix and is overall better that the popular 28-135 IS lens.
Of course like any lens it should be used with its hood. Normal filters and even a normal circular polariser have not caused any vignetting wide open.
I have run some simple tests that show it to be pin sharp and have very little distrortion at 28mm wide open unless it is shooting at an angle to the film plane.
All in all this is a top quality consumer lens that will surprise fussy enthusiasts.
My ratings below are based on what this lens is meant to be - not what it "could be". Strengths: optical quality, speed, AF, value for money, compact size and light weight. Weaknesses: Maybe a little to "placcy", but it is a lower cost consumer lens. Canon should include a lens hood.
