    Strength:

    Well made
    Fast focus (see above)
    Compact and discrete
pleasure to use on the 5D
IS works well on the 5D

    Weakness:

Disappointment on the 350D (see above)
Over priced when compared to the non DO lens.
Doesn't work well with a UV filter

I have used this Lens for over a month and on two different cameras, 5D and the 350D. On the 5D it is a splendid lens without any real problems. Its compact size, fast focus and IS make it an ideal travel/general purpose/telephoto lens. The 70-300DO has a much wider field on the 5D than on the 350D putting it into my general purpose category. The IS on the 5D works extremely well and I can easily get an extra 3 stops of light without any shaking.
The results on the 350D is a bit of a mixed bag. The auto focus is inconstant and give similar or slightly worse results than on the 5D. It must be remember that if 5D was cut down to the same size sensor as the 350D it would only be 5 Mega pixels. Some images on the 350D looked a little washed out (quite easy problem to fix in PhotoShop/Gimp), yet were not on the 5D. The images taken on the 350D needed a bit of a tweak using unsharpen mask at 0.1 @70% in PhotoShop/Gimp to bring up the fine detail. The UV filter on the front of the lens can’t be used as it makes the images to look a little wasted out. (See for details http://www.fovegraphy.com/70_300DO_TipsE.php). The image stabilization was not as effective on the 350D as on the 5D, this was taking into account 1.6X magnification.
My intention was to use the 350D and 70-300 DO for nature work. The increased the magnification to 480mm (1.6 x 300mm) would have been a real benefit. Because of its inconsistent operation on the 350D I have ruled this out. Generally, I think anyone buying this lens, that costs nearly twice as much as the non DO version, for the 350D will be disappointed with its results.
On the other hand, it is a pleasure to use on the 5D and has become one of my favorite's.

    Strength:

    1. Small in size compare to other EF L series optics 2. DO gives great image result! 3. IS work nicely, importantly on the long end - 300mm

    Weakness:

    1. Feel a bit heavy in such small size, on the other hand, with soild build! 2. Heavy front elements, lens creep happen without lock up the lens on 70mm position! 3. very very heavy zoom motion from 70mm to 300mm. Not nearly as close as the 70-200mm F4L

yLong term user for the 70-200mm F4L and just want to have a bit more in the long end. Therefore, I would like to give it a try on the new EF70-300mm DO IS! First, I must say for such a small size was very nice indeed! DO optics give great image result close to the 70-200mm F4L, and the function of the IS complete it nicely! If you using the 20D or the 300D digtial, this one is great to go with the EF-S 17-85mm IS and EF-S 10-22mm at a complete travl zoom set!

    Strength:

Very well built. Image quality on a par with Canon L series lenses. Lens hood included. Small and Light. Image stabalizer. Superb glass !!

    Weakness:

Needs to be stopped down to f8 for very best results but other than that no other weaknesses found so far.

This is a superb lens which knocks spots off the older 75-300mm IS lens. Its pin sharp, light and short and has a zoom lock to prevent the lens telescoping when pointed downwards. It will be spending a lot of time on the front of my Canon 10D.

    Customer Service

Has never been needed with this lens or any other canon lens.
