Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $700.00 from B H PhotVideo

Summary:

Picture quality as good as the Canon 100-400 USM IS except it does lack the IS feature which is a huge deal and makes the Canon a Great lens except it is almost a $1000.00 more expensive. This lens is far superior to the 75-300 lenses from Canon and Sigma. I think for the price, THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN!

Strengths:

Excellent Focal Length.
Superb Image quality.
Relatively compact and easily handholdable.

Weaknesses:

ZOOM CREEP.
Rotating front element.

Review 2 of 2

Model Reviewed:
AF 100-400mm f/4.5-6.7 APO Maxxum

Summary:

Very capable lens; just tug along a tripod, and you won't be disappointed.

Strengths:

Excellent optics, traditional superb Minolta quality.

Weaknesses:

Big and heavy, should have come equipped with a tripod mount.

In fact, the lens grouping is so heavy, that in order to facilitate zooming, I hold it up vertically to retract, and down vertically to extend.

No, this may not be the heaviest lens out there, but anyone familiar with weight and balance issues, knows that moment-arm and center of gravity, are of equal importance. I cannot fathom using this lens without a tripod.
