Review 1 of 4

Price Paid:  $159.00 from Ritz Camera

Summary:

Very intuitive to use, took a little getting used to that both the zoom and manual focus are rotational (my old zoom slid back and forth to zoom) I purchased for outdoor / sports and am looking forward to using for Special Olympics Alpine Events

Strengths:

Very easy to get started with, reasonably priced
I have been getting excellent close up shots photographing people at fairly close (>10ft. away) range even zoomed all the way in (300mm)

Weaknesses:

No image stabilizer not overly pleased with auto focus over long distance zoomed all the way in (300mm) I have camera armor and it's a little tough getting the lense on, must pay close attention and align everything up exactly

Review 3 of 4

Price Paid:  $200.00 from Ritz

Summary:

I bought this lens to take mostly sports of pictures of kids. The lens is well made with a stainless mount and good dampening. It is heavy and as a result autofocus is OK but can hunt at 300mm if you aren't rock steady with the lens. Reasonably good optics and a good value. I now know why you can get $thousands for a fast 300mm lens.

Strengths:

well made cost pretty good optics

Weaknesses:

wish it were faster

never needed

Review 4 of 4

Price Paid:  $199.00 from ritzcamera.com

Summary:

This Quantaray lens is manufactured by Sigma for Ritz Camera. The Sigma version of the same lens was $50 more expensive than the Ritz version. I was so impressed by the quality of this Sigma lens, I bought one of their 24-70mm to complete my beginner collection of lenses (wasn't available with the Quantaray name on it).

$250 would still be an exceptional value for this lens! The glass is clear, the autofocus works well enough, the macro setting produces clear and sharp images, and the zoom barrel is nicely dampened. This lens just produces great pictures!

If you're a beginner photographer on a budget, this is a great acquisition to get you into sports and nature photography.

Strengths:

Excellent value!
Clear, sharp pictures from high-quality glass.
Lightweight & compact for a long zoom.
1:2 macro!
Works flawlessly on my Pentax ZX-30.

Weaknesses:

Auto-focus sometimes needs help at long focal length.

Similar Products Used:

Pentax 35-80mm f/3.5-5.6
Sigma 24-70mm f/3.5-5.6 aspherical
