Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $93.00 from B&H

Summary:

I bought both a 58 mm and a 77 mm B & W graduated neutral density filter (2-stop) from B&H. I have used these on four of my lenses--Canon 24-105, Canon 70-300, Canon 50, and Sigma 10-22. The quality of these filters is exceptional. I recently used both of the filters in very tricky lighting of snow-covered mountains in bright sunlight. I took pictures with the filters on and off, and the difference is incredible. The foreground detail with the filters is much better, and the sky and snow colors were unaffected--but somehow they look richer!

In regard to the other review, I have purchased cameras, lenses, and filters from B&H for years, and have never had a problem. Their service has been first-rate, at least for me.

Strengths:

Solid feel, quality optics--filters do what they are supposed to do.

Weaknesses:

None yet!

Similar Products Used:

I have never used a graduated neutral density filter before, so I have nothing to compare this to.

Customer Service:

Excellent

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $65.00 from B&H Photo

Summary:

I purchased a B+W 49mm and 55mm Graduated Neutral Density filters, both with 2 stop graduation (#502). I had used a Cokin filter for many years and it is indispensible in overcast lighting. But the Cokin is awkward to use and I wanted to replace it with a simple screw on type.

Both the 49mm and 55mm were obviously defective, even while they were in the box. The 55mm had almost no tint at all - just a little area on one edge. Thru the lens, there was no darkening visible at all. The 49mm was graduated over half the filter, but the tint was obviously too light. Both by my meter and comparing to the Cokin, the darkest part was AT BEST one stop.

B + W obviously has no quality control. You could see at a glance that both of these filters were defective.

Also, I would never recommend buying from B&H! They were abusive and rude when I called them about this problem. And I originally just wanted to exchange the filters for a more expensive brand!

Strengths:

None

Weaknesses:

Inadequate tinting. They do not conform to their specifications.
The threads bound up - I could barely remove the filter

Customer Service:

Customer service from B&H is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! I have rarely dealt with such rude people in my life. He was insulting from the very beginning. His first comments accused me of damaging the filters! When I asked the guy if he could check if they had other problems with B+W, and if the Heliopan had a better track record, he hung up on me!
