Review 1 of 3

Price Paid:  $840.00 from Jessops

Summary:

I seldom do architecture but when I do this lens is a must. Bought mine mint used and it's a gem when used with tx film such as Provia 100F. Soft wide open even unshifted due to large image circle - needs f/8 or smaller aperture, so it's not a substitute for the 45 f/2.8 for general wide angle use, though I have used it successfully hand-held at f/11 in good weather!

Strengths:

Sharp and contrasty stopped down 50mm focal length (31mm in small format) is perfect for most applications, given the 3:4 ratio of 645 frames

Weaknesses:

Soft at f/4-5.6, so not suitable for general use unshifted. Reliance on stopped-down metering/hand-held meter, but that's to be expected!

Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $0.00 from Jugen's Photo, Tel A

Summary:

This has become my favorite lense between 35mm and 645. I shoot it stopped down on a tripod, the corners are as sharp as the center. I'm looking at a photo taken at Shivta and blades of grass in the lower left are as sharp as the center. Shift is an awesome feature, I thought I would rarely use it, but it is extremely usefull and your photos show it when compared to a similar photo. My gf shot the same picture (in Shivta) with a 35mm WA and a side by side comparison shows the distortion avoided with the 50mm shift. As it is a manual lense, I forget to set the aperature after focusing, small price to pay for the really nice distortion free shots. also, the shift allows you to shoot around corners, sort of.

Strengths:

When combined with the the 2x teleconverter you get a 100mm F64 lense when used with 25ASA chromes you can take 27 day time exposures in full sun. Ok, F4 isn't really slow for the purpose of the lense. F32 minimum aperature allows some creative DOF use.

Weaknesses:

No tilt, but I don't care.

Review 3 of 3

Price Paid:  $800.00

Summary:

Outstanding lens, possibly the best deal for
shift lenses on medium format.

Strengths:

Very sharp, low distortion, high contrast.
Ruggedly built.

Weaknesses:

I would like a slightly wider lens for this kind of photography. And tilting would be much appreciated.
