Review 1 of 28

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
That Canon would make a printer requiring the user to return the entire machine to be taken into an authorized service shop is astonishing. Eventually every owner will see their S9000 warn them about the overflow pad at the bottom of the printer, and soon the printer will stop functioning. Other problems with the S9000 include a tempermental print head, which requires regular cleaning (and ink waste). On our S9000 the paper alignment bar is extremely sticky, worse than any bottom-of-the-line printer we've operated. The paper handling is pretty bad, and the S9000 will occasionally pull in paper at an angle even though it has fed straight. After a year-and-a-half, our S9000 is about dead except for B&W printing.

Strengths:
Separate cartridges allow for ease of replacement. When working well, this printer is great!

Weaknesses:
When not working well, the S9000 is a complete pain.

Review 2 of 28

Price Paid:  $150.00 from ebay

Summary:
Owning both a s900 and an s9000 (bought the 900 at a second hand auction just for an xtra print head.. but it works like new) ANYWAY I have not had any problem with print discoloration when printed on good paper (not canon good) jetphoto and kodak and 3M professional. also its a good thing to put your prints under glass.. UV rays will distroy any print. I was previous to owning the canons a proud epson owner but the canon just is a better performer. There is only 1 problem i have encountered in either printer... both do not have the proper color correction when you print sephia prints.. I have to raise the magenta and cut back the cyan +6 -4 respectively. to get a good match. Color is dead on with no adjustment.. which i do find curious. as far as people stating print problems.. must be related to the head.. you cant let any print head go dry.. once it does your screwed you eiher find a cleaning cartridge or opt for a new head.. or option 3: (you never heard it from me) soak the head in denatured alchohol for a few hours then put it back in and run a couple deep cleaning cycles (somtimes as many as six cycles) I never had to replace a problem head after attemping to fix it myself. Also remember the addage crap in crap out.. that goes for printer paper as well as poor quality images.

Strengths:
photo quality prints faster drying than the epson 1280 (finer pixel spray) ink doesnt clumb as badly when using cheaper stock to print on. Definitely a lot cheaper to operate than the 1280 epson

Weaknesses:
can not let the printer head dry out. sephia toned printes require a color correction. occasionally you have to realign the printer head.. this isnt a 1 shot deal like with the 1280

Review 3 of 28

Price Paid:  $0.00 from UK

Summary:
I've just bought an Epson! I was delighted with the Canon at first, but I've since had a couple of pictures on my wall. After three months they're going seriously pink. A monochrome print I produced six months ago is a pink colour compared to prints produced three months ago. And I mean strong pink!

Strengths:
Quick. Relatively cheap.

Weaknesses:
See above

Review 4 of 28

Price Paid:  $950.00

Summary:
Having had 5 epson printers from the original colour stylus on I was increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of reliability & cost of consumables. Most problems with the epsons resulted in a trip to the repairer if it was more the a simple jet clog. Opinion from many friends seemed to suggest that the canon printers were bullet proof. Moreover if the was a significant problem then at least you could replace the print head (vs epson). I've had the S9000 for 14 months and printed about 120 A4 photoprints, about 400 smaller prints & about 500 non photo colour docs. I've only had to put the printer through a cleaning cycle once. (humidity always >50%) Quality remains consistently good providing you use accurate colour profiles. No banding is visible to the naked eye, some slight vertical patterns when magnified. I moved to digital photography and haven't looked back.

Strengths:
The S9000 is fast for printing colour photographs, only other canon printers are faster. You can really appreciate it when you see it printing beside an Epson 1290. The current inks seem OK for longevity, I have a few hanging up (under glass) and they show little or no fading yet although none are in direct sunlight.

Weaknesses:
Ink usage is quite high though a full set of cartridges go about as far as my last epson photoprinter. Until recently I achieved the best quality prints only on Canon's photo paper pro, which is probably the most expensive brand paper to buy of any of the manufacturers brands. Recently I've been using Ilfords Galerie range of papers which are about 40% cheaper. You have to use custom profiles to get the best from these papers. Finally, I recently bought a 2nd hand S900 and now I do all my proofing and sub A3 printing using refilled (from the S9000) cartridges and lyson inks which saves about 60% of the cost of ink. No problems with the S900 and refilled cartridges but that's another review
