Review 1 of 12

Price Paid:  $150.00 from ebay

Summary:

If you got or are getting pixelated photos or poor quality... doesnt matter how experienced you are... you dont know how to use this printer... change the print quaity setting and the pixelation dissapears...let me repeat, change the print quality settings and the pixelation dissapears... I've used an s9000 and now a i9100 and they are about the same.. the i9100 does borderless 11x19 thats about it.. resolution is 2x.. but this doesnt make any difference in the final print quality. sad thing about the bad reviews is that all the info on making good prints are in the user manual on the disk (which is different from the printed manual) and there are some good cheap inks out there under $2.. you have to test drive and find the ones that do the best job.

Strengths:

canon photo printers just cant be beat.... eyeing a i9900 now

Weaknesses:

I have to admit there is a problem.. sometimes you really need to remove the printer drivers and reinstall them..also ive had to change usb ports before... and i dont have a clue why it makes a difference.. but the printer just quit printing on the port it was attached to for 6 months.. thryed everything to get it to work.. then out of deseration I plugged it into my hub and voila it started working again... the other port is fine.. plugged my scanner into it.

Review 2 of 12

Price Paid:  $205.00 from IVEX.com

Summary:

I have used Epson printers and HP printers. I really like the HP printers ... I still am using the HP P1000, PS 7550 and PS 7660. The HP printers use a pigmented ink that HP claims will last 73 years. This is good. However when I print a photo with any of my HP printers, I can go brew a pot of coffee, check the mail and read the front page of the local paper waiting for the photo to be completed ... typcally 3 minutes on a 4 x 6 and 6 minutes on an 8 x 11-1/2. When I firt set the Canon i9100 up I really did not realize when I bought it how big a "foot print" it had. It has its own old TV stand, as it won't fit on my computer desk. Setup was quick and painless. The ink tanks installed easily, without any errors. Once setup was completed and I printed a test page, I was satisfied. It was not until I printed my first 4 x 6 's and an 8 x 11-1/2 than I really smiled and was more than satisfied ... less than a minute on the 4 x 6 's and less than 2-1/2 minutes with the 8 x 11-1/2. Very nice prints they were. More smiles when I printed an 11 x 14 print ... fast and beautiful, I framed this one and put it on my wall under glass (necessary for the dye based inks, which suffer from chemicals in the air and UV radiation degradation). My smiles were not done. I printed out a couple of 11 x 14's, a few 8 x 11-1/2's and a fistfull of 4 x 6 's when I got a yellow warning light for my magneta and cyan ink colors. I bought refill kits from inksell.com for the color, photocolor and the black inks. It was quite simple to refill the two ink tanks ... inksell provides a very nice video on line, and includes very complete instruction in their kits. It took me all of 20-25 minutes to refill the two ink tanks. I installed them and continued my printing. I have lots of HP Premium and Premium Plus photo paper on hand, the ink tanks refill easily and quickly ... the printer prints gorgeus prints very fast ... it's a keeper for sure. My 3 HP printers do very well with pigmented inks, black and white prints and infared transmission from my HP camera, so I keep them also. The Canon would make a good in "All in one" printer for the home user who might like to print an occasional large print. It also makes for an excellent specialty printer for the photo hobbyist.

Strengths:

Fast, colorful, gorgeous prints ... did I say fast ... large format

Weaknesses:

large "foot print" takes its own stand, dye-based inks might suffer from exposure to air and sun over time ... need to be kept "protected"

Review 3 of 12

Price Paid:  $270.00 from Ebay

Summary:

I have used several inkjet printers from manufactures such as HP, and Epson, but after seeing prints from a friends Canon I went ahead and bought the i9100. At first I was furious! This printer spit out some of the worst prints I had seen yet... but it was my own fault. I had chosen an aftermarket ink. I spent lots of time reading articles about new inkjet technology and everything pointed towards using the right ink and paper to get the best results. Without making this review too long... I ended up purchasing OEM Canon ink and printing on Canon, Epson, and Ilford paper and I am still stunned at the results. With the right ink and paper this printer is truly amazing... everything including the largest prints is incredible!

Strengths:

- Relatively quick printing - Great output with beautiful color reproduction. (With the right ink!) - Easy to use with enough options to be useful but not staggering.

Weaknesses:

Expensive ink to replace!

Similar Products Used:

HP, Epson, Lexmark

Review 4 of 12

Price Paid:  $259.00 from Ebay

Summary:

Disappointing. Although the Canon i9100 is indeed a wonderful printer, you will see the pixels no matter what you do. I would recommend this printer for casual photographers or beginners, but as far as selling pictures produced by the i9100, it isn't going to happen.

Strengths:

The i9100 is fast and the ink cartridges last a long time. It is very easy to set up. You can be printing 5 minutes after opening the box.

Weaknesses:

No USB cord included. From a foot away, you will see pixels galore, regardless of using the best paper, highest resolution scans, or varying contrast and brightness.

Customer Service:

None needed.

Review 5 of 12

Price Paid:  $440.00 from B&H

Summary:

Be warned Reviews, tests and even the Canon website claim this printer will “output can rival professional photo labs.” If you have any intention of selling work from this printer, you will be disappointed. Regardless of the settings you use, you will see the pixels. I saw one review that said the same thing… but perhaps hoped that it was just one unfortunate review of a defective product. Plenty of other reviews contradicted that statement, claiming the pictures were sharp and pixel free. I have an extensive technology background, and did enough troubleshooting that I am certain I tried EVERYTHING to get this to work. I wanted it to work, as it would have cut down costs of some printing considerably. It just doesn’t. I would almost say that it works for family/friends photos… maybe even putting your favorite photo up in a frame. Thumbnails and business documents are a possibility. But there are plenty of printers that cost half as much that will do a Much nicer job. The only thing that would warrant getting this is if you truly must have the capability of doing 13x19 prints for personal enjoyment of photography. From 5 feet away, the prints DO look very nice… Neighbors, friends and people who aren’t particular about what they see will be in awe. But anyone that takes an extra 20 seconds to look closely will see just how digital the results are. (you don’t even need a loupe to see the pixels… less than a foot away, they are obvious) The results do NOT even come close to lab prints. I am now trying to figure a way to upgrade to the Epson 2200. Or downgrade to a basic printer for documents, and leaving the photographs to my local print shop.

Strengths:

Extremely fast Large format (13x19) Photos look very nice from a distance

Weaknesses:

Pixels gone wild: you'll see plenty of them. Price... Ive seen $120 printers that create smoother prints.

Similar Products Used:

Epson 1280, HP 1100

Customer Service:

Pretty standard Im sure it just depends on the person you get when you call. I had both good and bad experiences with Canon Cust. Service/tech support.
