Review 1 of 50

Price Paid:  $0.00 from Macmall

Summary:

As a Mac user and graphic artist, Epson has always been the printer of choice. I've owned four. My experience with Epson has been mixed: I've replace two printers for obsolescence rather than dysfunction, and was once cheated out of a mailed-in rebate. In my experience he 820 was the worst of the bunch. Nearly every time I turn on the printer (I don't print daily) I have to run through many cycles of head cleaning before anything will print. I always assumed that it was just that I had a lemon (it serviced under warranty) but as I've read here, my problems are common with the 820, I can't remember the last time I was able to print a presentable high res output, which for a graphic designer is important, but I definitely can't do that now. The jets seemed to be faulty. Maybe I have a lemon, but other than printing text, this printer is utterly useless. Also, the paper loader seems to only effectively run with one sheet at a time as it tends to pulls several sheets in at a time to disastrous and discardable result. I'm now in the market for a new printer; This time it won't be an Epson.

Strengths:

None, really.

Weaknesses:

Dysfunctional ink jets which inefficiently use ink and produces poor quality prints; Poorly designed paper loader.

Review 2 of 50

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

Worked good when I first got it, then the clogging and lines began. After running the head cleaning utility it releases so much ink into the inside of the printer that it gets onto the rollers and leaves lines all over. The head spreads it over and over again, so even cleaning the rollers manually does no good. It will not even print one page without getting the black lines down the page again.

Strengths:

Good for as long as the included ink lasts, unless you don't use it often enough.

Weaknesses:

listed in summary

Review 3 of 50

Price Paid:  $150.00 from CompUSA

Summary:

I own this printer since October 2001. The only reason I was keeping it was the great print quality. However, the heads clogging become a nightmare. I don't understand people who suggest printing something daily to avoid clogging. Unless you own a print shop, it is impossible. If you do not use it a day, you probably need to clean heads. After a week - you have to. After a month - you need to spend about half the ink from the cartridges to make it work. I never forgot to turn it off, but, on one occasion, it was on and idle for about 6 hours. After that it behaves like it was abandoned for a month. In sake of a print quality, I tolerated this very long time, until Epson switched from Japanese to Mexican-made cartridges. They clog way too much, and the last one was not recognised at all. Don't buy this printer! Look at EBay listings: nobody is buying them even for $10.

Strengths:

Excellent photo quality

Weaknesses:

Clogs up too much, does not recognise brand Epson cartridge made in Mexico

Similar Products Used:

Canon i860, HP LaserJet 6L

Customer Service:

N/a - never needed

Review 4 of 50

Price Paid:  $99.00 from Circuit City

Summary:

I have long been a fan of Epson printers. I have had four dating back to the original Epson Color Stylus. Tried an HP back then ('94) and had miserable results. Only reason I usually upgraded was to get better technology. I found this stream of poor reviews because I have become exasperated with cleaning the heads on this printer. I just printed out a color document (with text) just fine. Less than twenty minutes later and I couldn't print out B&W to save my life. Not so much as a drop of black ink on the page! I think the only way I'll be buying another Epson is if I can clean only the B&W, I don't need color to print B&W, and I read where they have improved the problems with the ink clogging. I hope you're listening Epson, because I used to always brag about you. Now I'm ashamed I have one!

Strengths:

Nice prints

Weaknesses:

Ink clogging - bad enough to not want to buy another Epson after over 10 years of using and promoting them

Similar Products Used:

Epson Stylus Color, Epson 640, Epson 777
