Price Paid:  $129.00 from CompUSA

Model Reviewed:
Lexmark Z53

Summary:

Want a great photo quality printer? We looked at the Lexmark Z53 and the Epson 870 and they are very much alike. We got to demo both and prefered the Lexmark over the epson. Less lines appeared on the Lexmark. They are both good printers for the money.

Strengths:

Easy to use. Double cartridge holder. Great quality pictures.

Weaknesses:

Needs to come with a USB cord! Noisy start to paper feed.

Similar Products Used:

Lexmark Z11 (not photo quality)

Price Paid:  $249.00 from Ritz Camera

Model Reviewed:
Epson 870

Summary:

Very good photos....I am a very big fan of the software that comes with the printer (except that it does not have the editing spectrum that I like). I have read other reviews, complaining of the cost of ,and the ink use.....TRY ORDERING FROM EPSON!!!!For instance..Best Buy in Norfolk,Va..$28...Comp USA....$28..Epson site $17..for color(no tax,no shipping,3 day delivery!..This is for color. The black ink is $27...but,it last thru 4 color inks....)Cost of my photos..$1.50..Thew paper is also cheaper @EPSON!!!!!!!!

Strengths:

Like everything.......except.....

Weaknesses:

Limited format....

Similar Products Used:

Lexmark 3200 (talk about ink HOG!!!!!!...but god pixs.just not true "photos") Lexmark Z51....did not like this one at all..Quality just was not there...Paid $149....Sold for 50 bucks!

Price Paid:  $249.00 from On-Line Staples

Model Reviewed:
Epson 870

Summary:

This is my 2nd Epson printer (Went through 2 HP's) Epson is a much better printer in my book. My 640 still works great after 4 years so I went with the 870 to print my digital prints. Love this printer. I only use it for glossy prints. I use my 640 for everyday printing.

Strengths:

Glossy prints are hard to tell from photo lab prints!

Weaknesses:

Ink!! Uses lots of ink, But this is due to 5 different colors of ink in the color cartridge. So there wouldn't be as much of each color.

Similar Products Used:

Epson 640

Review 4 of 31

Price Paid:  $250.00 from Comp USA

Model Reviewed:
Epson Stylus Photo 870

Summary:

I'm not real please with the Epson 870, I have a Lexmark Z52 also. Printing scanned old photos, the Lexmark Z52 is by far better and the quality is good on most brands of Photo paper. With the Epson 870, the only great photos I've had are limited to the Epson Glossy Photo paper which is very expensive. I've tried HP glossy, Kodak glossy & Epson Matte and each time the photos are very poor quality. The reason I bought the Epson 870 was because I do photo scrapbooking, and the ink is suppose to last much better. Now, I've found out that the ink can have an orange tint after a very short time, so I am very very disappointed that I purchased the 870. It costs about $3.00 to print out an 8x10 page, which for scrapbooking is quite expensive, especially when I'm concerned as to when it's going to turn color.

Strengths:

Excellent color photos on Epson glossy paper

Weaknesses:

Uses lots of ink, poor quality on black & white photos, quality is very diminished on paper other than Epson glossy photo which is more expensive than other brands, such as Kodak.

Similar Products Used:

Lexmark Z52

Review 5 of 31

Price Paid:  $179.00 from Staples

Model Reviewed:
870

Summary:

I am a professional photographer and I am completely impressed with this printer.

It does use a lot of ink, however, well worth the cost!!

I download images from my Nikon 990 and they come out beautiful.

Strengths:

Superb quality

Weaknesses:

Uses a lot of ink

Similar Products Used:

Canon BJC 6000

Customer Service:

There is a problem hooking up with the usb port. Don't hook up the usb to the computer until it prompts you to in the printer driver wizard.!! This will save you a lot of headaches!!
